New PC build advice

Hi All

 

Been out of the PC building game for a few years now, and as technology has advanced quite a bit over the years, it is time for a decent upgrade that will keep me busy for a few years again.

Now for the important questions:

1. Budget & Location

As you can see the following build is already pulling at NZ$6 000 (Recently moved to New Zealand). Now I don't exactly have a budget set out at this stage, but if I can get the same/similar setup for cheaper, all good then. Not sure which Ryzen CPU would provide the best performance/price wise, thus I put in the 1700x as it seems to be the best middle-ground between the 1600x, 1700x and 1800x.

2. Aim

The reason for the build has 2 priorities:

1. Well obviously gaming!!! More importantly, High Res gaming if possible. I do a lot of Single Player gaming (Skyrim, Tomb Raider ....), but also into the Multiplayer setup (Diablo III, Battlefield 1 ...). So the rig would need to be able to play most games preferably at High to Ultra settings at HD and would definitely like the possibility of 4K gaming, thus the inclusion of the LG 4K FreeSync monitors and the Vega GPU.
2. I am a Software Developer, so I do a lot of programming after hours, so the rig would need to be able handle a VM that houses all my programming needs (Software, Web and Mobile based technologies). The reason for the VM is because in the past I have run into numerous performance problems when certain IDE's are installed along with multiple games. So when the VM runs, the machine would need to be able to treat the VM as if it were the "Primary" without performance issues.

3. Peripherals

As I am going for an RGB build, so looking for a decent Mouse & Keyboard setup that will blend well with the rig, but will be able to handle the balance between Gaming and a lot of typing for Programming. As for OS, will be installing Windows 10, as it seems Windows 7 is not supported by Ryzen which is a big bummer.

4. Why are you upgrading?

Well have recently moved countries, and as my previous PC was an old AMD FX6300 machine, I was not able to bring it with me. Would this build be able to handle the needs or would it need to be modified?

What's your reasoning for the SSD mass storage? Also, I would go for a GTX 1080 Ti for that gaming resolution.

This would be better suited.

The 1700 overclocks to 3.9-4.0GHz just like the 1700x so no need to spend the extra money.

The NH-D15 is not compatible with tall RGB RAM, the Cryorig R1 Universal is and it has the same cooling power while costing less and looking way better

The m.2 I chose is better and a bit cheaper, while the mass SSD storage is nice to have and fast I think the money saved is better spent elsewhere. I added a super reliable WD black HDD, it will be fast too and very reliable

For 4k there is really one clear GPU choice, the GTX 1080 Ti, the money saved on the storage is best spent here.

Lastly, I added a windows 10 pro license since you did not include it.

I personally would get the Fractal Design Meshify C case but whatever you like best is the best option, so I left it

All of this for $100 less than your config

 

And daaaamn NZ you expensive

Looks like a great build. Are you going in a raid setup for your SSD's ? I have a Ryzen 5 1600 and that works great. If you want the extra cores than the 1700 would be better than the 1700X, you can still overclock the 1700 if you needed to which means you save the money that you would have otherwise spent on a 1700X. You might want to do a bit more research before commiting to the Vega. Apparently it isn't the best at the moment. Otherwise, pretty good build.

For the SSD, the idea is to use the one of 1TB for my gaming (Steam Library), then the other disk would house the VM required for all my programming needs. The VM itself will be around the 300GB give or take, where as games these days, average around the 50GB each when factoring HD texture packs and being able to play games are they are meant to. So having 2 separate disks would help that they do not clash with each other.

 

As for the GPU, I went Vega as I would like to take advantage of FreeSync technology which is standard on AMD GPU's. G-Sync is nVidia's version, but I cannot find an equivalent 4K G-Sync monitor for around the same price.

Cool thanks looks like an excellent build.

 

The reason why I went SSD instead of old mechanical disks, is for the speed. When it comes to rendering graphics for games and compiling source code, the speed difference is very noticeable.

 

The problem with the nVidia graphics card, it uses G-Sync as the screens are only FreeSync capable. Are their 4K gaming screens that can accommodate both G-Sunc and FreeSync?

 

Lol and yeah, NZ is very expensive when it comes to PC parts :-(.

Yeah, that makes sense it is just very expensive in NZ for 1TB SSD's haha.

 

Also, G-sync monitors are very pricey, but that 60Hz will work with a Nvidia GPU, it's when you go high refresh rate like 100Hz or 144Hz that you want to pair up the Nvidia GPU with a G-sync monitor or the AMD GPU with a Free sync monitor. But at 60Hz you can use the GTX 1080 Ti with those monitors. Alternatively, there are these with a lower response time of 1ms, but not IPS:

Ahhh okay, so would need a higher frequency monitor in order to make full use of the G-Sync/FreeSync technology? I see now that the LG screens only supports 60Hz and not higher. Not very knowledgeable when it comes to screens anymore as there are so many different things to look for and compare for to get the right one for the job.

 

I assume no one has released a monitor yet that is both G-Sync and FreeSync capable?

Yeah, you can get monitors that are neither G-sync or Free-sync. I would just stay with the monitors you choose and get the GTX 1080 Ti.
