Upgrading My Rig for 4K 60Hz

byalexandr

Now that I've had a taste of 4K, I can't get enough. But, I can't quite crank up all the settings with my GTX 1070 and still get 60 FPS. So I'm looking to upgrade my PC a little.

These are my current specs:

Ryzen 5 1600

Biostar X370GTN mITX

Crucial Ballistix 8GB

MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X

850 EVO 500GB

WD Blue 1TB

Define Nano S

EVGA BQ 650W

I've been wanting to go into a smaller case with tempered glass like the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift, but that would require an SFX PSU as well and probably a 120mm AIO for the Ryzen chip. That alone is going to cost a pretty penny, but I am thinking of upgrading graphics as well, either to a Vega 64 LE or something more high end from Nvidia. Though I don't like Nvidia that much, and I also don't know if the Vega 64 will be enough to play at 4K 60Hz (in the 50-60 FPS range with most if not all games cranked up all the way minus AA, since it is 4K).

I'm definitely keeping the Ryzen 1600, maybe getting a new MB since I despise this Biostar one as it has only given me issues at this point.

Anyway, I have about $300-400 plus whatever I can get by selling my GTX 1070 for this upgrade. I'm thinking of a Vega 64 LE, and an H80i v2 for now. I would like to change cases though, something small with tempered glass.

Any thoughts? Any other options I should consider?

Oh and I'm aiming for a very color neutral scheme for this one. Hence the silver Vega 64 and a nice tempered glass case to go with it (like the Evolv Shift). I have a very nice Corsair RGB kit so I would like to make that the center of my build not some bright red GPU or something.

All ryzen Mini-itx are black and red. You will have to mod. Second try for a gtx 1080ti, and third. Get a low profile 100w cooler for your cpu like the cryiorg c7

The best things to upgrade with your current build would be that of an AIO cooler: like a kraken x61 rev, a gtx 1080 Ti instead of Vega 64 for more gb to work with for video processing, and possibly add a few more sticks of ram at least one more stick for 16gb since ryzen prefers faster ram, and benefits from more ram. Also I'd say upgrade that mobo if you're going to get a new case the b350 mobo line is garbo for ryzen you're capping your performance rate with it. An x370 series mobo would be a great pickup maybe asus and asrock have pretty color flat mobos.

I mean, I can keep the one I have now. It's just black with RGB which is cool. I just don't like all the BIOS issues it has but I'm working them out.

I really don't want a 1080 Ti though. Yeah it's fast but I just don't want to spend that much on a GPU. I want something that will do 4K at 60FPS with no AA. Preferably from AMD.

And I'm not sure the C7 will fit, I've had the issue before with that cooler where caps and stuff get in the way of mounting because the cooler is so low and spread out.

I have an X370 mobo. Good board in general but the BIOS sucks. It has a neutral color scheme as well.

That is far from true, the good B350 boards can overclock and run just as well as the X370 boards.

For the cooler I wouldn't bother with a H80i, very overpriced for a 120mm option, pay a bit extra and get a 240mm like the h100i or kraken x52 or go for a decent air cooler, it'll perform the same

Quite nice then, I have the crosshair vi hero bios is quite nice and updates smoothly pretty neutral with a black and brushed aluminum finish, all in all biostar is a solid mobo company too.

From what I've been seeing, some b350 have a struggle in recognizing overclocks, smooth with some companies b350's but power to oc ratio for some boards is a bit wonky

well then vega 64 is around the same price as a 1080ti but I would also say one thing. Get a vega 56 and bios flash it to a vega 64 and then overclock. You will get close to 1080 performance but then the vega 56 is also the same price as the 1080.

For the cooler I would personally not bother going with an AIO unless it's at least 240mm. With 120mm AIOs you'd get better cooling for much cheaper (and less to break) with a decent air cooler.

FYI, even with a 1080Ti, a lot of modern games will struggle to get 60fps at 4k with completely maxed out settings. For example, PUBG and Wildlands... it just won't happen. Other well optimized games like BF1 and any older games should be fine but don't expect 4k/60 maxed out with every game.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

Does AMD allow that with Vega 56 or am I taking a chance on whether or not the card can be unlocked? Because if so then that’s the answer to all my problems ?

it is aloud but the vega 56 is the same price as a 1080......lower power?

No no what I was saying I do know that there are some good b350 mobos, but most imo arent worth it when you can spend the extra buck to get some guaranteed smooth oc's with an x370 board. I wouldnt personally risk things with a low end board set even if it since the board is the base to what I can and cant do.

Apparently (from what I just read) you can flash the 56 with the 64's BIOS and it makes it run nearly as fast. It does not however unlock the remaining cores.

I'd upgrade the mobo (Any other mITX except that piece of sheet) and better cooling. You can OC the 1600 to 3.9Ghz and get some decent gains even at 4K60Hz

GTX1080Ti for the GPU ofc

Vega for your needs doesnt even exist and 64 LE eats 400+ W in load and doesnt have enough performance to push 4K at decent details compared to 1080Ti

B350 boards are total garbage, the better ones can run 1600 OC/1700 stock decently, the worse ones struggle even with that. You are saying that they overclock and run just as well as X370 which is total BS and i have tested that personally
