so how many times do you think you could split the slot before the computer would just not work anymore? even if you stuck nothing onto the very end like sound/network cards.(provided these cheapo shenzhen adapters were all working correctly)

 

these adapters are universal and not passive server proprietary daughter boards , they do seem to add a new bus every time.

I too

however I KNOW those usb based cards have well over a 50% failure rate and are terrible. Also there are no supplemental power connectors on these so the original 1X slot of the board would burn out after a while or not provided enough power to all the theoretical slots

well, i guess if you don't actually try to power anything with them it would just go on untill they consume too much power on their own.

Is it even possible to go from PCIE to PCI ? They are different protocols.

Which is even worse, PCI is bus limited to..whjat? 133Mhz? You'd end up with a really bad PCIe slot.

true , but that's still enough bandwidth to detect more buses being attached , it would be slow but so long as nothing is on the very end the speed wouldnt matter.

there's no psu connectors so I think 20 gpu's would blow out the motherboards 1x slot. you'd have to splice in power connections to the usb cable every time it splits I think

if you soldered power wires onto every single pci-e slot directly to the power supply it would work. the slot would favor the power from the power supply directly and it would prevent the original 1x slot from burning out as the electricity takes the shortest path.

You'd do all that work? I'd just probably get a couple completely different PSUs to run that many graphics cards and have each PSU supply a few GPUs...

You'd do all that work? I'd just probably get a couple completely different PSUs to run that many graphics cards and have each PSU supply a few GPUs...

you could add some of these into the middle of the chain and they'll provide extra power as the chain grows

I'm almost willing to bet any card on the very end of such chain wouldnt have enough bandwidth to even operate. Or , it would lag so badly from having to pass through so many buses that the machine would bluescreen assuming the card wasn't responding.

That would actually be interesting because: would the card respond after the bluescreen? And if so, what would happen when it does respond?

I still have one or two PCI cards laying around (an old Soundblaster for sure), so I can understand that these PCIe->PCI adapters can have their use.  Still, I'm struggling to think of a PCI device that can't be replaced with a more modern and cheap PCIe version.

voodoo cards , cnc controller cards , building security system controller cards

essentially controller cards for very large machines/systems
