Hey,

I'm having a problem installing more RAM on my custom rig PC, I already had 8GB so I bought 8GB more.

The problem is that when I try to insert all four sticks the pc won't boot, but I have already tested all sticks on their own and they seem to work fine.

Old memory is Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB (2x4GB) 2666Mhz DDR4 CL15 Black

the new one is  Kingston HyperX FURY 4GB 2666Mhz DDR4 CL15 Black (bought separately because it was cheaper)

PC specs are:

Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (6.3, Build 9600) (9600.winblue_ltsb.170914-0600)
System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: Z170X-UD3
BIOS: F2
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 8142MB RAM
Page File: 3285MB used, 37624MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
User DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)
System DPI Setting: 144 DPI (150 percent)
DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled

Thanks in advance!

Will it boot if you first reset your BIOS CMOS to factory defaults, then install the additional RAM?

Have you attempted the following?

  • Check they are in dual channel.
  • Re-seat both to ensure good connection.
  • Check if will boot separately.
  • Check Bios to see if they are recognized.

I have checked and all of them boot sperately and i ensured good connection.

Is dual channel like 1&3 , 2&4? if yes then they were.

I can't check the BIOS because it won't boot to it.

sounds like a DIMM slot issue

could be related to any number of things, but the most common I've seen is bent pins in the cpu socket (or just reseating the CPU)

does it POST if you only have 3 sticks installed?

It doesn't post with 3 sticks.

But they do post with 2 be it in 1&3 or 2&4.

I have found from experience that mobos prefer that memory be the same size if using multiple sticks, it is possible it is mad at you for using none similar sized dimms.

It gets stuck in a reboot loop.

Have you tried testing every DIMM slot to see if they all work?

For that matter, does the issue persist with a clear CMOS?

does it hang on a debug LED code?

Upon further inspection it seems that it hangs on 55 before rebooting.

i'd try taking the cpu out, inspect the socket to see if there's any bent pins, and reseating the cpu again.

I'll try that tomorrow when I have more time.

Thanks for the support, I'll post what happened after I do that.

there is one more thing you can try. are you still able to tell which set of ram was the original, and which is the new?

i'd label the two original sticks A1 and A2, and the two new ones B1 and B2. try all the combinations: a1a2, a1b1, a1b2, a2b1, a2b2, b1b2. if they all get you to windows, all your ram is confirmed good. since we know that the slots all work, it's either CPU issue, motherboard issue (but not the slots), or a single bad stick throwing a fit.

I have an 8GB and a 16GB kit, that's shouldn't affect it

I RMA'd an old ASUS board with this many bent pins, and the only major thing that was to be noticed was 1 memory channel (out of three on x58) didn't work_thumb_17412.png.a8d2e88bf84674e834bc36529227f857.png

not a great photo, but definitely shows that it can take quite a few before anything could stop working
