How many drives does it have inside, if you add more, is the inner workings set up to cool the drives properly?

Nope, its only got 1 drive. Whitch is ok. I don't need a petabyte but yeah it probbably is a good idea to put the OS on a seperate SSD.

The less the media storage drive has to multi-task, the better your throughput will be.

WD makes some nice drives dedicated for media streaming, NAS, RAID, etc.

Depending on your budget, of course.

 

Also, you say "old Optiplex"...how old? What model is it?

you can use any operating system. if you have Windows on it, configure your drive as a network share.

 

please bear in mind though that "normal" pc's are not designed to be used 24/7 like a server is. 

consider turning it off when you don't need it. 

 

and make sure it gets proper airflow and cooling.

I have two OptiPlex systems that have run for many months at a time. They have no issues and are very reliable. They were very overbuilt for their job, so running them as servers isn’t a problem. One of mine has over 55,000 hours of server use.

Yep and if you use purpose designed software i.e. unRAID or FreeNAS there are features for spinning down and putting the system to sleep when not in use mine is pulling 35-50 watts from the wall when not in use

my pooint still stands, they were not designed for 24/7 use. just because yours has been running like that with no issues doesn't mean the OP's will.

I fail to see your point my desktop pc's are for the most part on all the time be it active or in sleep mode which would basically be the same as a NAS in sleep mode the only purpose part is that they typically use NAS grade ram i.e. ECC modules and redundancies such as dual psu's and add in's such as nic's or RAID cards which can be added to HEDT mobo's if that is what you're looking to achieve so it's a toss up the OP is clearly looking at small time storage so if it's putting a RAID card in his daily driver or converting to a purpose use build it's the same in this use case.

I'm just saying about the OptiPlex family. They're really reliable, and I've only seen one system have an issue: a broken chipset/hard drive controller, and that was just because it was really abused.
