PSU got really loud.

Hi guys!

 

Basically another topic of me having weird issues with my new PC. This time it's the power supply.

The PSU in question is be quiet! dark power pro p8 1000W that served me really well in my previous build (3930K one) and so I decided to move it to my new build.

The issue is really simple: fan keeps spinning at a really high rpm (my guess is max rpm) making it really loud and not worthy the be quiet! name

 

Even at idle the fans spins like crazy and I checked the air coming out of it and it was as cold as my feelings are to my new computer right now so the PSU is definitely not overheating or anything.

 

Any suggestions are welcome

Could be a faulty fan speed controller on it

Did this only happen when you moved it to the new build?

It's the first time it does things like that and today I double checked because I was cleaning it from dust so i took extra care about making sure that there is no dust inside of the PSU.

 

My guess is maybe somekind of energy managment on X299 makes it incompatible in some way with this PSU

Usually if the PSU's fans are spinning up like crazy then its on its way out.

 

Does it get all loud if you try to start the PC without a GPU installed?

Can't reallt test it that was as Core X CPUs don't have integrated graphics so the PC wont boot

Do you have another PC you can try it in?

Nope this build is the only one I have right now as the old build has been moved to my parents house in case of gaming while there

It'll boot it just won't show any POST. I am aware of that. Just try to start the thing without a GPU as the PSU will still start.

Unplugged the GPU and the PSU still starts at max rpm and keeps it that way...

Nope, too old.

The old P8 only had 3 Years Warranty. 

And was replaced somewhere in 2012 or so with the P10 (well and the 850W P9 of course 1 or two years before that)...

Can't RMA it as the PSU is already 5 years old and the warranty was for 3.

So you say that I have to replace the power supply because of the fact that it can kill my PC or just for the fact of the annoyance that is a loud af PSU

Replace the PSU unless you're an electromagician.

Was it especially cheap??

 

Because even before the P10, there was the (golden) P9 although with only 550, 650, 750 and 850W...

Only the fan controller is blown, nothing else is wrong with it.

Only the fan controller is blown, nothing else is wrong with it. 

 

Not sure if I bought it in 2012 exactly but I remeber it was a pretty good price so quite possible I bought the P8 right after the release of the P9

Thats a stupid idea because the fan can't be regulated by the PSU, the PSU can overheat and cause a FIRE.

Especially since we are talking about parts that are rated for around 150-175°C....

So basically its time to get a new PSU and throw this one into a PC that I dont care is loud.

 

What do you guys think of Corsair HX850i (planning to get a Volta x80 x80Ti when it releases or maybe even two)

The thermistor that controls the fan speed died.  The fail safe for that is to have the fan spin at 100%.  There's no fixing that.  Just need to replace the PSU.

Not just the neccesarily Thermistor, the could have failed Transistor as well.

And there are also models that fail short instead of open wich is not desired in this case (failed open = no spinning fan, PSU overheating, failed short = +12V on fan).
