Is 1440p gaming really as good as it sounds?

Dunno. Depends on who you ask. Personally, I feel that 1440p is a significant improvement over 1080p when it comes to image quality.

My friend has a 2560x1440p monitor and says that it's not that much better than 1080p. He says either 1080p or 4K but I feel like 4k is 2 expensive and 1440p is the sweet spot.

Is it overrated?

4k is better in my opinion , well literally 4 times better.

I'd say 4 k is worth it , but I wouldn't bother with 1440p. if anything buy a 4k monitor and you can run stuff at lower resolutions if you want.
