It still works, I've installed around 200 Laptops (HP Folio 9480m, with an OEM Windows 8 License) directly with windows 10 and it detected the key and activated itself. (all within the past 5 months)

Ye but did you tried it with a Win 7 OEM key ?

There is an amazing amount of mis-information in this thread.

Let's look at the facts, shall we?

Win7 is established, stable and mature (the bugs have been ironed out)

Win10 is a work in progress each and every time MS decides to "update" something.

Win10 has so much telemetry you cannot turn off, and that's fine if you don't mind them spying on your activities. I am not.

*Some* of Win10's telemetry has been back-ported to Win7, but it's optional under the updates, and doesn't have to be installed.

Win7 automatic updates hasn't broken for anyone except people with broken systems (source: IT professional, me, with decades of experience managing Win7 systems)

Win7 will be losing "mainstream" support in 2020, this much is true, but notice the word "mainstream", at my job we are supported for 10 years with MS, and the patches are individual so they will show up online, and can be installed one at a time.

In short, Win7 isn't going anywhere soon. By the time it's phased out, MS *might* have Win10 stable and secure, and then again, maybe not.

Go with tried and true, don't be a beta tester for Win10

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

IIRC Windows 7 was the OS that got most infected by the ransomware this year

Of course.  Most big companies stick to Win7 and wait a couple of months to install updates to make sure there's no issues with the udates and they don't affect the workflow.  In the case of WannaCry the exploit came so fast that most of their IT departments hadn't tested the relevant updates for the Win7 machines yet, making those machines vulnerable.

As for vulnerabilities in general, guess which version of Windows had the most issues last year .
