Depends on the game, the resolution and the framerate. If you play games like BF1, GTA V, Watch_dogs 2 or if you want to play games at 100+Hz, the i5 will be a huge bottleneck. 

So what would be the cheapest 8 thread cpu, that you would recommend?

I have recently built a new computer.I noticed that 1050 ti isnt a good graphics card, so I want to buy a gtx 1080,but I dont know if it is okay with the current Cpu.

Yes it should bottleneck any thing above a GTX 980ti/1070.

Yes, the i5-7400 does bottleneck the GTX 1080.

depends on your resolution, 1080P, yes, 1440P not so much - keep in mind games are now beginning to use more threads, so I would suggest a 8 thread cpu as the real minimum now for gaming, providing its in the budget

I have no idea where these guys are getting their info, but the i5 7400 WILL NOT bottleneck a GTX 1080 a ton like they say.

 

Will there be a small bottleneck? Sure, but one that isn't noticeable, unless you are super competitive and need as many FPS as you can get.

 

For the record, I have a Ryzen 7 1700X at a stock 3.4ghz and in all my games that don't use more than 4 threads there hasn't been a bottleneck. I also have a GTX 1080.
