Can someone explain to me why VR games require very powerful cards when you can count the poligons in the games? Every VR title that I've seen has really bad graphics compared to pc games, yet it requires a lot of processing power. Why is that?

Because a lot of VR titles right now are made by small indie or lone wolf developers and typically aren't very optimized.

Plus as manikyath mentioned, you're looking at ~2 times the pixels per second as 1080p 60fps gaming, with a requirement to handle it at *much* more stable framerates. If your 90fps game dips to 50fps occassionally it's not the end of the world with a monitor, but with VR it will be incredibly nausia inducing.

Plus your graphics card also needs to be able to do certain affects to the frames as they're being rendered such as asynchronous reprojection ans lens distortion correction, that add to the frame times and makes it harder to keep frame rate consistent.

VR is one of those things that you should overinvest in your graphics power compared to what you'll actually use, since if you don't it can lead to very uncomfortable experiences.
