If go 1700x. I've got one, and it seems to OC better than the 1700. Lower voltage for same OC, or sometimes higher. Know a couple guys who can't get past 3.8 to well on 1700. But get a good motherboard. 370 chipset if you're gonna OC.

thats called silicon lottery, maybe when you go for the x they kinda tested it before to garantee better oc ? or is there something i dont know ? :)

for mild OC the B350 will be enough

but for pushing high OCs you need to be using at least X370 and 280mm AIO coolers

1700X can also hit 4GHz

but it seems there are rare case of of the 1800Xs hitting 4.2GHz on liquid on the Asus Hero board

I've heard they are binned better. Not positive, but sounds reasonable. They seem to have better odds at getting to 4. I got my 1700 there as well.

Water is definitely the way to go. B350 are good for mold OC on R7, and supposedly enough for R5?

I've got the H100i v2 AIO, and it handled my 1700x very well.

I'll have to see the 4.2. that's awesome.

4.2GHz with the MSI board

but yes the 1800X can hit 4.2GHz with high volts but will run 4GHz everyday no issues

Not at all, no b350 has good enough vrms for even a relatively mild r7 OC.

prob the cheap B350 are not advised for R7 OC, they can run the 1700 no complains at stock speeds and normal boost clocks

the Asus B350 Prime and the MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK are still fairly decent boards

I seen 1700 running 3.9GHz on the MSI Tomahawk board

All.  B350. Mobos. Should. Not. Be. Used. For. High. OC. R7.

That tomahawk may literally catch fire in the coming months, no b350 on the market is up to the task of powering anything over 3.7ghz stock voltage long term.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

so those using B350s with R7 are having a risk of fire like the Note 7 you mean :P

The R7 1700 or the i7-8700K. Would actually prefer the latter for your use cases.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Oh yeah absolutely, I don't even oc to my chops max (4.1ghz) because my crappy x370 would commit sepuku
