This might be a stupid question. I have an old HP 8570w mobile workstation laptop. I comes with an Intel core i7-3820QM and an AMD FirePro M4000 GPU. If I go on the AMD website to look for a graphics driver for this old card the only one that shows up is called "AMD FirePro HP Mobile Software Suite Multilanguage" and the version is 15.201.2401. I currently have this driver installed but the problem is that I often have issues running newer games with it. I know this computer is nothing special and not a capable gaming machine but I was wondering if installing a newer driver might help to improve either the compatibility or performance of newer games. Any knowledge on this issues is appreciated.

I am afraid I can not help you with this other than tell you that a friend of mine also had trouble in various games (like Guildwars 2) not starting at all. I suspect this is due to bad drivers by AMD but idk if his issue could be resolved yet. Confirming what you suspect is all I can do for you.

Professional GPUs and driver updates are a no-no.

Pro drivers must be certified for industry standards not performance bleeding edge goodies.

They are in the opposite side of mainstream hardware where having one or two crashes is nothing to cry about.

Your GPU aims to maximum stability, swapping drivers directly compromises that. (think of a driver as a small plug in to the system, where every part must work flawlessly), hence every driver is launched widely spread highly tested with almost zero differences if any. (most of changes are stability oriented).

In short: Good luck, expect it to be the same as today.

  • 1 month later...

Well I tried messing around with some of the newer drivers and was unsuccessful. I actually used AMD's auto-detect tool and it had me download some very new crimson drivers for professional cards. I later discovered this was because it incorrectly detects the GPU as a different mobile professional GPU. The drivers seemed to work with at least as good or better performance in games however they were much less stable. I just ended up wiping all AMD drivers from the system and installing the recommended ones from the website again. Thanks for your help.
