It depends on the workload. I personally don't run VMs on spinning disks without a hardware RAID controller anymore but that's my personal choice. Running 5-7 VMs on a single HDD would be painful for me but it might suit your needs just fine. Also only 6 cores for 7 VMs + the host? Ouch!

Even with the 8700k, holding 5-7 VMs is nothing to scoff at.

7 vms with 2 cores each (almost a minimum) = 14 threads

The 8700k can only do 12.

RAM is decent, depending on what you need to do in the VM.

But the machine will definitely pwn at gaming, I give you that.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

You can actually run multiple VM's with all 12 threads if you'd like to. The host will take care of all scheduling needs.

@Slayerofhope what are the VM's for?

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

That is what you need, and here's why.

CPU: It has 12 threads. That's more than enough for what you're doing. Windows machines will need two cores, Linux only needs one unless it's heavy duty. Thing is, you can scale way past your actual thread count because the VMs won't be horking down on CPU power 24/7. I know a guy who runs 15 VMs on a Pentium because he's only limited by his 16gb of RAM. You'll be more than fine with what I've got here.

RAM: This you actually do need to scale properly. Thing is, Linux can run on so little, that you don't need much of it. 32Gb should be more than enough to run a couple Windows, your host, and quite a few others.

Storage: Two 1tbs and a nice boot SSD. Just spread your VMs across the HDDs and you'll be fine. The images for Linux will be so small that it'll be fine.

GPU: I've saved you so much money by now compared to your original that you could have two of these in SLI. I don't care. It won't affect VMs.

Everything else: Is just a placeholder. You can get a different case or whatever if you want. The PSU would be what I would get for efficiency and no excess cables because it's semi.

If you're going to be running more than 1 VM at a time, don't put them on the same HDD. It will be your bottleneck and even with a decent 7200RPM drive it feels like you're running them off a flash drive.

but if the VM is idling then it shouldn't have much of an effect

Why not? I have 2 Hyper-V machines running on my build non stop and I never had any problems with gaming.

VMs that he mentioned, are running at 0% most of the time. Here and there some spike to 10% on CPU/HDD and that's it.

Intel i7 12700K | Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 | Pure Loop 240mm | G.Skill 3200MHz 32GB CL14 | CM V850 G2 | RTX 3070 Phoenix | Lian Li O11 Air mini

Samsung EVO 960 M.2 250GB | Samsung EVO 860 PRO 512GB | 4x Be Quiet! Silent Wings 140mm fans
