So I have a 6850k but I'm looking at the new 8000 series chips and thinking that my cpu just degraded from a high end i7 to a i5. However i5 and i7 chips are both quad core with hyper threading so I'm now hella confused. Someone please explain.

what

old i5s were 4c4t

old i7 4c8t

new i5 6c6t

new i7 6c12t

You may as well not upgrade your PC since something "better" will always come out.

Keep your 6850K until A) it loses it's performance quite drastically (none of this 10Hz slower nonsense) or B) you have a need to do an upgrade.

How did it degrade to a i5? It has six cores and twelve threads like the i7-8700K, supports quad channel memory, and has 40 PCIe lanes...

Your 6850K is still on par with Ryzen 5 and the new hexacore i5’s in terms of performance, not counting its extra PCIe lanes and stuff.

The “on par” means you don’t need to upgrade since your performance in the end will ultimately be pretty similar. You’ll get a single core boost with the new i5’s, but lose some of your multithreaded performance unless you buy an 8700K.

Basically, your CPU is still up there with the latest stuff. You’re still good to go unless you know for certain it’s holding you back somewhere.
