980ti Good deal?

I have the chance to buy my friends 980ti for $350 Canadian plus my GTX 760 (I only paid $50 for the 760 about two months ago) So it would cost me exactly $400.

 

My friend bought this card used also, but my friend didn’t use it much. (Used it lightly through the summer) Anything I need to watch out for? My friend used a shitty 600w Thermaltake unit to power the card but apparently the guy before took good care of it. Is the power supply my friend used gonna make the card not last as long?

 

I was going to buy a 1080 for 650 from

newegg in about a month anyways. (650 is tax and shipping NOT included) 

So I would be saving close to half my money if I snagged this 980ti right now. It’s an EVGA SC, I think.

 

I got a i5 6400, 8GB of RAM, a GTX 760 and I have a be quiet pure power 10 600w in my system currently. I play at 1080p mostly but will step it up to a ultrawide later. (Running 2 1680x1050 screens on the sides)

Depends. A 980 Ti is basically a slightly faster 1070 that runs a little hotter. I believe they are about 5% faster on average (OC vs OC). If a 1070 costs more than $400 Canadian then it might be a good deal. Also, depending on when he sold it, it could still be under warranty. EVGA's warranties follow the product, not the user, so if he purchased that 980 Ti towards the end of it's market life cycle, you might still be able to have that safety net. Would have him check to see if he can remember when he purchased it.

Hmmmm.... They are about $300-350 USD near me (I got mine for $300 before the mining craze), so if that converts to more than $400 snow pesos, then it's a good deal.

That isnt a bad deal but maybe talk him down on the cash considering you are giving him a 760 too

About a month before the 1070 launched, I bought a 980 Ti for $400, and after the 1070 launched, I sold it to my little brother for $300. The funny thing being, his 980 Ti at 1440mhz was slightly faster than my 1070 at 2050mhz, lol. 

 

At the time, I was heavy into ITX, so I really could not keep the 980 Ti cool, and it was far easier to have a 1070 in the node 202 over a 980 Ti. I'd say he is getting a pretty decent deal, seeing as I just googled 1070's in Canada and they cost $515 Canadian on the cheap end. If he can talk him down any at all on the cash, that's just icing on the cake.

^^^^. My 980Ti at 1600mhz beat 1080FE cards. Lol. That’s why pascal doesn’t impress me at all

I said $330 plus my 760, he wouldn’t do it. So $350 and my 760 is the lowest he will go. 

 

Also what do I need to do to check if my 980ti is under warranty? Do I just call up EVGA and they yes or no and hope for the best?

Well, you can either ask him to provide the date he purchased it (via receipt or invoice), or you can ask EVGA to check via the serial number, which will warranty it based on manufacturer date. You would be better off getting the sale date from the seller though, as that would give you the best chance at a decent warranty. Just tell him if he provides the receipt/invoice to prove when he purchased it, that you will go ahead and do it for $350 plus the 760. No matter what, your warranty is at least guaranteed until June of 2018 (unless the card he bought was refurbished, in which case, it likely already had it's 1 year warranty expire). If he purchased the card in early 2016, it might have a warranty until 2019. 

 

Just something to consider when buying a used card, as it kinda takes the sting away when you have that safety net.

I’ll attempt to track down the original buyer. My friend didn’t think to get a receipt or anything...
