A pre-built will have a OEM copy of windows 7 on, which is tied to the motherboard.

So you won't be able to use it.

And yes the hard drive will be fine as long as it actually works, just format it and pop it into your machine.

You won't be able to just simiply take it out the pre-made and use the OS on that hard drive, there will be registry issues and it won't work correctly

You will have to re-install.

You can get win 7 for free from..well yeh you know where.

But it's against the CoC to say where and give links.

Back the OS up on a USB and then clear the hard drive.  Attach it to the new mobo then boot from the USB.  Just changing the mobo with the same HDD could cause a problem with some registry errors.

I think MS is still offering the 90 day trials windows 7 Images on MSDN or somewhere. http://www.redmondpie.com/download-windows-7-sp1-rtm-msdn-technet-iso/. That's legal, but you will still need a proper key to activate it after the trial.

NO. UNDER STAND OEM. (A windows 7 key is a key is a key is a key) Here is what I do all the time. Step one go the the per-built POS and find the key. Write that shit down. Format drive. Put in new PC. Install win 7. Put old key in. Done.

The biggest difference to you or me would be the lack of any technical support for the software. This is now supposed to be covered by the OEM, which is now YOU. The lack of tech support is how they can sell it cheaper.
