this is the new rig i am going to start building.

but i am stuck on a few things:

  • i don't if i should air cool the CPU or to water cool it with the cooler in the list.
  • i can't make my mind up, should i use 16gb or 8gb of RAM

other than them decisions id really like a general feedback as well, thanks!

If you want silence and better overclocks, water cool it.

16Gb memory is the sweet spot for pretty much everything.

Also that's probably the best looking AM4 motherboard I've seen.

Good luck!

Get a cheaper motherboard and an R7 1700. Get 16GB of faster RAM. Don't spend that much for your OS. Get a better SSD(MX300 or 850 EVO). You don't need an AIO for Ryzen, it's pretty efficient. A nice air cooler will be quieter and cool Ryzen 7 perfectly adequately.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor  (£251.94 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! - Dark Rock Pro 3 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler  (£50.38 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Asus - STRIX X370-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard  (£171.14 @ Alza)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  (£119.65 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£131.94 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: Palit - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Dual Video Card  (£365.94 @ Aria PC)
Case: Fractal Design - Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case  (£79.99 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 (EU) 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£76.77 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £1247.75

A bit more expensive but GTX 1070 instead of 1060. You can drop the Dark Rock Pro 3 for now and just run stock cooler, or drop the 1070 to a 6GB 1060 to get the system under £1200

Yeah, stock cooler is pretty decent too. The DRP3 will perform significantly better but you can run stock cooler for now and upgrade to something better, like the DRP3 later when you have some more money. Worth it to get the GTX 1070 in the £1200 budget IMO.

If you're just gaming with the system, you might even want to wait a week for an i5-8600k

seems likely just checked intels website. the reason i went for AMD in the first place was because intel only offered quad core. nut the new i5 has 6 cores now.

@Scubabyron23

Post the uk.pcpartpicker.com permalink. Better yet, click [bb], then copy & paste the result in your post.

How is the system to be used?

Did you consider waiting a week or two to see if Coffee Lake cpu offer better price/performance?

Typically Ryzen cpu do better with higher speed memory.

Windows 10 OEM license does not permit use in DIY builds. Windows 10 Home (32/64 bit) or (64 bit) on USB or download are for DIY builds.

The WD Green M.2 drive is SATA III, not NVMe.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

October 5th for release of 8600k and 8700k, along with Z370 motherboards so I'd suggest doing this;

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core OEM/Tray Processor  (£218.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! - Dark Rock Pro 3 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler  (£50.38 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Asus - STRIX Z270F ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£151.80 @ Aria PC)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  (£119.65 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£131.94 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: Palit - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Dual Video Card  (£365.94 @ Aria PC)
Case: Fractal Design - Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case  (£79.99 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 (EU) 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£76.77 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £1195.46

but with an 8600k and Z370 motherboard obviously. Grab an Asus Strix or similar motherboard for £150-160. 8600k will out-perform Ryzen in games, and handle multicore stuff pretty well, but Ryzen 7, or even Ryzen 5 will be better than 8600k for streaming, content creation, and other multicore tasks. With the 8600k, you get GTX 1070 and DRP3 within £1200.

Alternative PSU you could get. The 750W PSU will give you SLI support so you can easily add a 2nd GTX 1070 at any point if you want, but it's non modular.
