I am upgrading my current computer.... I have a question..... I have old DDR3 800mhz ram... Will they work in the newer MB that are DDR3?

Thanks

Andy

If the new board has DDR3 then yeah, but I may want to get some faster RAM, as 800MHz is quite slow.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Thanks for that info... So, the 800mhz ram would be a bottle neck?

It depends on the work load. Most people won't notice but if you have a faster CPU then you may find that slow ram is a bottle neck.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I haven't seen DDR3 at such slow speeds. I'd suggest using faster DDR3, that is if your computer supports DDR3.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Okay.... Thank you for the help.... Time to look at DDR4 ram then.

what RAM you need to use is determined by what CPU you have.

any newer intel on socket 2011-3 (x99), 1151, 2066 (x299) needs DDR4

so does any newer AMD on socket AM4 or TR4

you only need to worry about DDR 3 if you go socket 1150 or older

- and yes ... DDR3 800MHz was a thing - i have seen it listed on various spec sheets, primarily for low power systems (intel atom and the likes) but i have never ever seen it used - the slowest DDR3 i have actually seen with my own eyes was 1066MHz.

800MHz was very common with DDR2 tho
