you're not asking the question. ppl dont always want to throw money at problems, and buying CPU ram and mobo is just that.

If your making a gaming pc don't go with any amd cpu that's not ryzen.

Good rule of thumb, unless it's Threadripper. But FX, the APUs, and older CPUs are all pretty crappy, and much better Intel CPUs are available if you go for used. If you get a good deal (probably around $70-100 tho) on an X58 mobo, you can get an old LGA 1366 Xeon for cheap and overclock it to 4GHz on air. I just got a 2.66GHz 6c/12t Xeon for $17, gonna get a good mobo and see how far I can OC it on air.

I second this. Crazy value for money. If you want a while system, look on eBay for used dell Otiplexs as they can be cheap but pack some power.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

The main differences between the two are the stock clocks and the integrated GPU. If you are interested in using them as APUs (i.e., without a discrete GPU), or if you don't want to overclock at all, the A10 is better

If you are willing to overclock, and you are going to have a separate graphics card, they are pretty much the same. However, if you are not interested in the iGPU and plan to use a separate graphics card, I'd recommend saving money and getting an equivalent Athlon x4 (860K-880K).

Actually, that's not that great a value. Pre Sandy Bridge stuff from Intel doesn't enjoy the kind of performance advantage over Bulldozer and successors we've come accustomed to (remember that you are relying on a 50% overclock here - let's not even mention power consumption. Also, the Xeon you mention sounds like a Westmere, which is more specific than 1366: having worked with clusters of Nehalems, I wouldn't touch them with a stick if I have the chance of using Piledriver instead.) , and while you save some money (vs. FX - an APU system would still cost less than Xeon+motheboard+GPU, even if you just get enough GPU to match the iGPU), you also give up modern features by going with an older platform. So, it's more of a trade off.

It's viable, but it's far from an obvious route for someone's main/only PC.

True. But tinkering fun, watching all my threads in task manager fun, and I have a USB 3.0 card an SATA SSD so I'm good there. Plus RAM is cheap.

True, if you get Registered ECC support on the motherboard, it is. Normal DDR3 is not as cheap as it should >:( (in March-July last year, used 16GB kits were going for 50-60% what they sell for now O.o)

I love how like no one answered his question but me, have to realize that this could be a OEM build that is looking for something basic to run like youtube, netflix basic games he never stated he was going to buy a brand new desktop with either the A10 or A8 in it and i would hope he wouldn't unless it was 30-50$ as one can get used I5 2400's desktop's for 80-120$.

A10 7870K can do all basic tasks fine not sure it can handle 4K youtube though that takes a lot of juice.
