It depends on the game and resolution. But yes, generally a hyperthreaded quad core would provide more consistent frametimes in the form of higher 0.1% and 1% minimums.

Physical cores > Logical Threads

 

Always.

 

That said, the frequency and the software optimization play a key role in "what is better". More threads usually deliver a smoother experience, but aren't nearly as more threads.

 

If you are comparing i5 to i7, there is a difference in gaming but it isn't huge and sometimes it's not really noticeable if the two cpu you are comparing are at the same frequency.
