I wonder how godaddy can do that?

I myself use a web hosting service (Though I host websites too). You have to buy a domain at the minimum and find someone that will host it for you.

I would not attempt trying to host my own e-mail server...that seems too hard to manage for a home user personally.

What you're looking for is custom domains - essentially a domain name, such as linustechtips.com has the ability to have an MX record added (mail exchanger record) - this directs email where to go. Many domain registrars like Crazy Domains & GoDaddy allow you to point this MX record to them and have them host your email.

The issue with cheaper hosting such as the free inclusions with the above companies and many more is that they use the POP mail system: a key issue of this is that it struggles to operate across multiple devices and struggles to keep in sync. Microsoft Exchange or IMAP is much better for this. Exchange Online hosting starts at about $4-5 a user per month and IMAP is similar.
