Hi so like a noob I applied a lot of thermal paste onto my CPU and it is currently stuck pretty hard to my water cooler heat sink. Afraid of breaking the CPU I just installed it back onto the motherboard and it is currently running smoothly. I'm afraid that it will eventually overheat due to the amount of thermal paste I've applied however. It's been about 2 days now and I'm hoping to get some advice or tips on what to do. Should I remove it, clean it, and reinstall it or should I just leave it alone until the thermal paste burns itself off over the years? Right now my CPU is OC'd at 3.8MGz at 1.23750V. I have a Ryzen 1600. Temps right now at idle are around 34-40ish C. However, I do see temps just spike up to 47-49C from time to time and drop back down to normal temps. At usage, temps go up to 50C. I haven't seen it go any higher then 60C which is good. I'm using AMD Ryzen Master to monitor my CPU temps. I'd appreciate any advice on the matter and thank you in advance.

twist the heatsink and no damage will come ( keep the cpu in the socket just twist the cooler ), pops straight off , reapply new thermal paste after cleaning it and issue solved

NEVER PULL IT WHEN ITS STUCK, just twist it loose then gently pull

There is no performance issue with adding too much paste.

It literally does not matter.

between actual thermal paste's there is around 5*C +- difference only, however applying way too much or way too less can be a big 20*C difference ( or even more )

he also said hes got watercooling and hes hitting those temps which is quite bad ^^

Adding too much makes literally 0 difference.

The CPU cooler is mounted with pressure so any excess gets squeezed out.

The only concern is if the thermal paste is conductive it could short pins on the CPU/mobo if it spills out too much.

way too much can also cause uneven mounts, they dont take that in consideration, uneven mounts happen to everyone ( as soon u start a prime95 itl hit 100*C where its supposed to hit 70 overtime for example ) and that gpu video.... a gpu is supposed to have an extreme amount of thermal paste ^^

1) It's a PASTE.

It literally squishes when you mount a cooler on it, like a fluid.

Thermal paste cannot cause an uneven mount.

The amount of pressure from a CPU cooler is high.

2) Uh, no, a GPU should have the same amount as a CPU.

Who taught you how to apply thermal paste??

Update: so i twisted the heatsink but it was so stuck onto the CPU that it just yanked off of the MB socket with the MB socket pin locked down. 2 pins on the CPU were bent. LESSON LEARNED. My question now: do i need a new MB as well? Is my MB socket now compromised? I already ordered a new CPU. Sigh. Im really sad, but lesson learned.

This depends, I had a case where both the CPU and the MB were damaged - however I had made the mistake of attempting a repair of the CPU and putting it back in the MB. So I really don't know if the MB was dead before or after I put the dead CPU back in. I just had to replace both. Now as for me I ended up just taking that opportunity to do an upgrade of my system but if you have already ordered the same CPU it's too late for that :D
