Appraisal/upgrade help

Sanctorum

So I've been toying with the idea of an upgrade for a while. My current CPU is still pretty solid but Coffee Lake i7 is tempting. It's looking a lot like I'm going to be getting roughly £1000 soon, and while I'd like to re-use my CPU, it would probably be easier for me to just sell my system as is and put all the money made+£1000 in to a new system.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  (Purchased For £300.00)

Case Fan: be quiet! - Pure Wings 2 61.2 CFM  140mm Fan  (Purchased For £10.00)
Total: £1170.00

My current system as it would be sold. I set the prices to what I feel they're worth new. I was thinking £900-950 because that's around or slightly over 20% off cost new, but I still feel that might be a bit much and I'm probably being a bit bias since it is my own system.

On top of the appraisal, I'm looking for suggestions for a new system. So £1000 plus whatever my system is worth, I guess £1800-2000. I don't need kb, mouse, or headset and I have a decent monitor(LG 25UM58-P) but I'd consider a monitor upgrade if I can get something really nice for a good price. I'm looking for at LEAST an i7-8700k and a GTX 1070 in my new system. I'll also be repurchasing an EVGA G2 for the system, probably the 850W variant but I might just get the 750W variant if pricing is much better. Motherboard, I like Asus, maybe MSI. Something fairly high end but not stupid expensive. I'm thinking a Strix, TUF, or Carbon Z370. I'd like a case with a tempered glass window, thinking Meshify C or Enthoo Pro M.

This is with REALLY fucking high prices set for the 7700K (as 8700K isn't out yet) and mobo. When they /actually/ come out, we'll see how much they are.

idk

I know the temptation all to well even working on a fairly recent (skylake) CPU. (yes, even with skylake. stupid consumerism)

For coffee lake you need a new motherboard. Intel made that necessary.

I've been Intel all my life but right now I would buy AMD Ryzen since it offers a better overall deal.

The big Ryzen 7 with it's 8 cores... hrm...

And for coffee lake, only the i7 will really be worth anything in my oppinion. i5 six core? Ryzen has the same with hyperthreading at -100$.

And in games you really don't notice the difference.

That i7 though... 9_9

I'm terribly bad at evaluating built systems that are used and it's not my market (germany here, prices for used are insane. Almost same as new sometimes... People are greedy and crazy.)

So in conclussion, if you'll stick with intel, wait for coffee lake i7-8700k since that will be the only relevant cpu from intel then.

The i7-7700k is still said to perform better but only by a few % and the additional cores will be of much more value in the long run.

Oh, and have fun building ;)

I would sell the CPU, mobo and RAM as a set, graphics card sell by itself and reuse what's left. The more things you sell the less you get back from new ones.

Cheapest I can see a 4790k anywhere is £300. I'd say it's worth £225. Cheapest I can see a Maximus VII Hero is £160, I'd say that's worth £120. CPU cooler is easily worth £70-80. The RAM is definitely worth more than £65, that's about how much 8GB is. I'd say the RAM is worth £80-90. GPU I would have said £150 is reasonable. I wouldn't be keeping the PSU, easier to sell the system with it and I'd be buying a new PSU for the new system anyway. I'm sure I could easily get £150 for the case and PSU. That's £800-825 so I'm pretty sure the system is worth more than £760 maximum.

I'm expecting to pay £300-350 for the 8700k and £200 on a motherboard. My Maximus VII Hero was a £200 motherboard when I bought it. I don't plan on paying more than £200 for mobo though. I'm not sure I'll go with an X62. Haven't really decided on cooling yet. Will wait to see how 8700k temps are and then decide to either go air or custom{ish} loop(A240G). I won't be buying a 1080Ti, stupid overkill for my current monitor. I'd rather get a GTX 1070 and a better monitor, maybe higher refresh rate or G-Sync. I definitely don't need 32GB RAM, I'll be going with 16GB again.

I was thinking something like this;

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core OEM/Tray Processor  (£338.95 @ More Computers)
Motherboard: Asus - STRIX Z270F ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£159.10 @ Alza)
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  (£160.25 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: Asus - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB STRIX Video Card  (£451.66 @ Ebuyer)
Case: Fractal Design - Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case  (£84.98 @ Novatech)
Power Supply: BitFenix - Whisper M 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£114.95 @ CCL Computers)
Monitor: Asus - MG279Q 27.0" 2560x1440 144Hz Monitor  (£499.99 @ Amazon UK)

Monitor: LG - 27UD58-B 27.0" 3840x2160 60Hz Monitor  (£339.13 @ More Computers)
Total: £3872.27

8700k instead of 7700k obviously and Strix Z370F or whatever the equivalent is. I'm not sure if I should just get a Strix board though, or if I should spend a bit more for a Maximus board. I'm hoping to also get another SSD, preferably a 500GB 850 EVO. I included some monitors I'd consider upgrading to in the list above but I'm not sure if it's even really worth it.

I would sell the motherboard, CPU and RAM as a bundle and sell your graphics card separately, reuse what you currently have. Coffee lake hasn't been released yet, but if you are on the intel side, then wait for coffelake, 6 cores and 12 threads are good, but when it comes to the mainstream, the 7700k is the current CPU on the market available at the moment, since coffelake hasn't been released. There is a less expensive alternative, the R7 1700 with its 8 cores and 16 threads will benefit in multithreaded/multi core performance, but the 8700k has the clockspeed advantage by running fewer cores at higher clock speeds.
