My mid-tower is too big to fit on my new desk so I'm going to use my current PSU and GPU in a Micro Atx build around Chrsitmas, here's the part list:

Corsair Dominator Platinum 1600 16GB

Intel 4770K

2x Samsung 840 (Already have with W8.1 already installed)

2TB storage drive (Have)

H100i

Asus Maximus Gene VI

Corsair 350D

GTX 780 (Have)

AX850 (Have)

Should I get 4820K? Anything you would change? I'm completely open to all suggestions!

I was also wondering how the OS would handle it, I've never used a drive with an OS in a system build, (OEM W8) MS said they would reactivate the key, but will it boot if I just plug the SATA cable in? Thanks!

There's little point going 4820k.

What are the parts you already have?

What's the system being used for?

The 350D is pretty big for a micro-mid tower btw.

If you are getting the Maximus VI Gene the i7-4820K is not an option as the board has socket LGA1150. The Maximus IV Gene is an X79, LGA2011 board and would be compatible with the i7-4820K.

If you are getting a new motherboard and cpu the simplest and most foolproof approach is to reinstall the o/s.

If the plan is to RAID 0 the SSD, I'd suggest reconsidering. Buying a single larger SSD is marginally less expensive and the real world performance difference for all but significant serial write & reads is not noticeable.

The H100i is a tight fit in the top of a 350D. It should fit with the Gene although the build may be a bit of a challenge.

An 850W psu is much more than is needed for the build, even if SLI is planned.

I saw that there is a version of the Gene that has a 2011 Socket so thats why that was there. I'm also reusing the AX850 from my previous build that (until the 780) had 2 GTX 680s. If I reinstall the OS on the drive that already has one will that duplicate it? I already have the 2 SSD and HDD. BTW I like challenges lol

350D is a really nice case. After having built my ATX system in an R4, I wish I had done an mITX or mATX build.

When switching to a new motherboard / cpu the o/s needs to replace modules for the old board / cpu with those for the new one. Unfortunately Windows is not good at doing this. The best is to start with a clean drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. That said, if you search the net you will get several hits for "instructions" on how to migrate to a new motherboard without reinstalling Windows.

It's not worth going any lower than a 3930k if you're going 2011.

I'll be sure to figure out both options. I may just completely wipe the SSD before i do the swap, is that the best way? Thanks for all the responses!

A fresh install is best.
