i was watching tech-quickie just now , at about the 3:40 minute mark, Luke says that when an ssd dies, you can no longer write to it. does that mean that typically, you can still read the data on it, so you can move it to another drive? or am i interpreting it that way by mistake?

I'm pretty sure when an SSD dies, it's dead and your chances of recovering the data are next to nil.

I believe that Samsung has a SMART feature which for example warns you of failing 'blocks' of data.

an "early warning" system is a great idea. as long as it is widely used or better yet, an industry standard. if its only on a few though, its only good for those who get that specific brand and/or model.

I'm pretty sure there are some 'universal' programs. Even that is better then back in the days of HDDs. You had to go by sounds. :D
