Hello!

Can someone help me figure out how to set a custom resolution for my second monitor? I have one full HD monitor (1920X1080) and I got a second smaller 4:3 aspect ratio display with a resolution of 1280X1024. I would like to increase it's resolution so that the height would be 1080p. I've tried it with windows, Nvidia control panel and Display Fusion with no luck. The reason why I want to set it at that specific resolution is that I would like both displays to be the same height so that when I'm using stuff like Blender I don't have to fill space that doesn+t exist and I can't see with windows that I'm not gonna use.

Thanks in advance!

if the monitors resolution is 1280x1024 there's no way to increase that.

I did it once... I just can't remember again. And no. I don't mean to add more pixels. I want to increase the resolution of the picture from my computer.

While it will likely look terrible, it is possible to do. A quick Google search found a guide on YouTube which you can find here.

Please note that I don't have any nvidia hardware, but AMD has a similar feature and so does Intel. I have used both AMD's and Intel's versions of this feature to configure an unusual display.

Any users claiming that there is no way to do this are flat out wrong and should stop posting misinformation. Thanks.

Thats the max resolution of the display the only way to make that bigger is to buy a new monitor.

Isn't it possible to trick your computer to think that the monitor can output a higher resolution? What I mean by that is that I could force it to run 1920X1080. But that doesn't work for me cause the aspect ratio is wrong.

Not really, the way he words it makes it sound like he wants the monitor to run at 1080p, which it can't. Sure he can output 1080p to it but it only gets displayed at 1280x1024, I think most of us just mis read what he wanted.

As soon as you start increasing the resolution above what the monitor can handle you will just get a message that says out of range, and a few moments later it will be back to normal. I think what you are trying to do is to essentially zoom into whats on your screen?

In the days of windows XP it was, but it never worked and would just give you the out of range message, or an incredibly blurry display.

DVI and up can get information about the monitor to the PC, which is why now in device manager you don't tend to see Generic monitor but VGA can't do that to my knowledge, which meant you could possibly do this but as I said its impractical.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

One thing I should probably add is that the last time I managed to resize the screen I connected it via a HDMI to DVI adapter. Could that stop the PC from recognising the monitor's native resolution?

Possibly. I haven't used a DVI to HDMI adapter so can't really comment, sorry.

The adapter will not interfere.

Actually no. I rewired the thing and connected the display via the adapter and then it let me set the custom resolution!

So the thing is fixed! Basically just make sure that you don't connect the monitor via the primary connector (the one where the BIOS screen) and everything should be fine.I've set the resolution with DisplayFusion. NvidiaCP kept crashing for some reason. You also don't need the pro version of the program to do that.

Odd, but good to know. I didn't have an issue like that with my adapter so I ruled it out prematurely. Glad you got it resolved!
