Hey all!

Looking at upgrading my rather outdated CPU and Mobo setup. Looking at an i7 7700k and need to know about PSU's and cooling, pretty sure my stuff will be fine since I'm not overclocking but need advice from those who know more about this gen.

GPU: GTX 970 2GB

Current PSU: 750W

Current Cooler: Cooler Master 212 EVO

Will this be enough for no overclocking?

Cheers!

If you dont overclock maybe get locked 7700 so you dont have to spend much on z series motherboard, on second better option, you can get ryzen for much cheaper as well as with board. but in both cases, you will need ddr4 ram. evo is fine without overclock or slight overclock. your psu is absolutely fine & one of the best, so no worry for that. what is your budget anyway?

Alright, the RM750x is a great PSU - here you'll be fine.

A non-overclocked 7700k is fune under the 212 Evo, it's a pretty toasty CPU so you will find yourself on the hotter side at higher workloads but nothing serious.

That CPU in combination with a GTX 970 will give you a solid 1080p gaming rig. :)

Cheers all for the helpful responses.

I don't really have a budget, on top of the cpu and mobo I need some DDR4 RAM too so its a case of saving up money each month.

Not hugely interested in overclocking but if I need a new cooler then one is on the list down the line.

Would an evo be fine on a bit of overclocking or is it something to avoid entirely?

If you get 7700k, evo is not a cooler that can handle its overclocking potentiality. for stock it would be adequate, I wouldn't expect more . as mentioned above 7700k is very hot chip. my suggestion is if you keep saving to make a figure then not to buy anything til you manage to get whole together. because if you prefer intel, coffeelake will be released soon & will provide far better value than existing generation of intel.

Before jumping on the 7700k, you should wait for the 8700k, which is theoretically launching this fall. 8700k adds two more cores, and from the looks of it will be able to overclock a lot better than Ryzen, giving it a more equal stance against Ryzen 7.

As far as a heatsink, the Hyper 212 EVO will work fine on the 7700k (and on coffee lake, presumably), as others have said. For an extra 20 dollars, you can get the Cryorig H5, which as some extra headroom for overclocking, if you choose to do so.
