Planning to upgrade but very unsure about gpu bottleneck

Jarl

I have a asus gtx 970 strix. Currently using an asus mobo with amd 845 cpu. My gpu is at 50% usage (seen in gpu tweak II).

I therefore want to upgrade my mobo and cpu and ram.

But there is litterally no info on gpu bottlenecking. Most info in Google is about cpu bottlenecking.

Will my gtx 970 deliver at 100% with the following upgrade spec? And is the effect of too poweful cpu more a case of the gpu reaching its own roof and it wont give any other negative side effects ?

  • MSI B350M Mortar Arctic
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1800X
  • HyperX FURY DDR4 2133MHz 32GB (2x16GB)
  • Kingston SSDNow KC400 512GB 2.5" SSD

what are you doing with the rig? just gaming or with streaming/editing/rendering? also, save your money and get the 1700 and overclock rather than getting the 1800x.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Nope a 970 will be perfect. Chances are you gpu was at 50% usage because thats all it could get coupled to that cpu. With the new one you can get full performance out of it with room to upgrade later on if you want. Now-a-days bottlenecking is really not a worry unless your running quite low end or old hardware with new, Like your 845 with the 970.

Don't see why you need 32GB or ram though. Unless you are running a server or a workstation that actually uses that amount theres no need to go above 16

casual gaming 2-4 hours a day. But i think i will never overclock anyway, and a 1800x will be equally as good since the amount of manual work and OC verification is also measurable in money since time is money (at least for me as a programmer first gamer second ..). But i see the other points here. 32 gigs ram is too much. ill go for 16 instead. can use my money on something else.

it doesn't take alot of time to overclock a 1700, just look up a couple guides online. you'll save a good bit of money and you can just use the stock cooler instead of getting an aftermarket cooler for the 1800x.

that said, do you think a non overclocked 1700 can perform with a gtx 970? do i really need the "newest" cpu? if i buy 1700 and use it stock, my theory is that it maybe will kick as much ass as 1800x coupled with my gtx 970?

the 1700 won't bottleneck the gtx 970 at all. It'll likely get bottlenecked by the 970 so you shouldn't see much of a difference in gaming between the 1800x and 1700 until you upgrade(and even then you can just overclock anyways). also wait for coffee lake if you can.

In most cases when Oc'd the 1700x is toe to toe with the 1800x. 1700 is not too far behind at all. There is a difference in performance but that's why they are priced in different tiers. a 970 should perform perfectly with a 1700. Although I would say buy better cpu then that even for that slight edge and being able to keep it longer

You honestly want to be gpu bottlenecked. It allows you to get the full potential of the gpu.

Need to follow up with a question about PSU watt. I have a 500 watt cooler master PSU now. Will that PSU support my spec below?

  • MSI B350M Mortar Arctic
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1800x (or 1700)
  • 16GB DDR4 ram
  • Kingston SSDNow KC400 512GB 2.5" SSD
  • Asus GTX 970 strix
  • Bak fan
  • Two top fans

I guess I dont really have that much stuff connected to the mobo. I used a watt calculator and it said I was in the 300-400 watt range with this kind of setup.

So is the 500 watt PSU enough for future upgrades?

exact model? 500w is enough but needs to be good quality.

not very good. if you're getting something as high-end as an 1800x(which you shouldn't; get a 1700 and oc) then you should have money for a better PSU. check our PSU tier list, a tier 1-3 PSU will be fine.

Ok. Adding a CM V650 fully modular psu to my buy list. Thanx for help. I have actually been thinking about getting a modular PSU. Much simpler cable management.

  • 1 month later...

Landed on the following buy list:

  • MSI B350M Mortar Arctic, Socket-AM4 (1 stk)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Prosessor (1 stk)
  • ASUS 24" LED FreeSync VG245Q (1 stk)
  • Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" HDD (1 stk)
  • Corsair Air AF120 Quiet, 120mm Vifte (2 stk)
  • Kingston A400 120GB 2.5" SSD (1 stk)
  • HyperX Fury DDR4 2666MHz 32GB (1 stk)\

Works quite well as you can see.

The machine has been idling for quite some time.

Not sure if the gpu temp is low enough, but low enough for me at least.

Thanks for all the help :)
