Overclocking broken

It's not broken lol. That's what overclocking does - Increases power consumption.

Turn up the fan speed - it's loud, but also probably effective somewhat.

it's also technically safe to run it up to 95c IIRC, so you're probably fine, but don't blame me if it dies.

But like it spikes up there immediately, not normally

I have a R9 280 that i want to overclock. Whenever i try to change the clocks on it, the temp soars to 90 Celcius. Are there any suggestions you all have?

By overclocking you increase the amount of power the card draws, which increases heat. Now if it is suddenly spiking to a temp as you have mentioned, that could indicate bad thermal paste as RadiatingLight mentioned. But before we accuse the thermal paste, at what temperature is the card at before you overclock? Does the temp spike when you apply the overclock or when you start a game or benchmark? List your idle and load temps for both factory settings and overclock on the video card

What clocks, voltage and temperature do you get when you do not OC and are idle AND benchmarking?

Then, what clocks, voltage and temperature do you get in the same workflow when you are overclocking?
