New to PCs building

Hey guys. So I heard from a buddy of mine that Linus is a good source to learn about computers, but i'm having a hard time actually understanding some (most) of the language used just because i'm so new to this. Are there any videos on Linus' Youtube channel, or perhaps other sources, that I can use to learn more?

embarrassingly, the specs on parts or what the parts actually do and why they are useful. I don't know what most of them mean. Is bigger always better? what are all these smaller parts that i have never heard of?

While Linus is a good source, I find him to kinda be like John Green from Crashcourse. He talks fast and it can be hard to understand what he says. I would suggest that you look at videos from several sources so you get multiple inputs.

It's not hard at all. To get the right parts, just follow Techquickie on YouTube, as linked above. The only issue you might face during the building is parts that won't fit, for that it's enough to do a little Search on the Internet or ask here on the forums.  Mainly, all you need is:

 

- A case

- A Motherboard with enough slots for the RAM you want to allocate, SDD, USB and other ports and RGP LIGHT PORTS (It hurts me to say it but, RGB is optional.)

- A RAM (Memory) you'll probably want to go for a 2x 4GB for a total of 8GB possibly of GDRR5 instead of DRR3

- An HDD, SDD or Hybrid, I recommend an SDD for fast gaming, HDD runs on a solid disk while SDD is closer to a Flash Drive.

- A CPU, High Clock Intel Core i5 (3GHz+) or 2.6GHz+ Core i7 [To prevent blottleneck between GPU and CPU] Gen doesn't really matter, but if it does to you, go for latest 7th (High clock i3 is NOT an option for Gaming)

- A GPU, possibly 10 series (To stay under 250 USD I recommend either a GTX1060 or 1050ti

- Cooler (water cooling is expensive, so go for Air Cooling) stock cooler for 15USD should be fine, will keep CPU under 80c under full load (100c + is to avoid, it won't damage the Processor but it just isn't good, CPU can easily get over high temps like 90c without issues, make sure you apply the Thermal Paste correctly, if you're wondering where it goes, it goes on the CPU just like CREAM)

- Monitor, up to 60Hz, possibly 1080p or higher (high resolution = lower framerate on Games, unless you scale resolution down in-game which will make the outcome image blurry and with LOADS of aliasing, so if the build ain't good go for 1080p instead than 4 DAMN K)

- Power Supply

- Accessories! Mouse and Keyboard (if you like)

 

Edit: Yes, Stock Cooler for K processors will keep it under 80c / a 1050ti for gaming is the best Price-Performance deal, but the 1060 is a bit more ""Future Proof"" and will be better to run upcoming games. And agreed with some replies, stock GPU will be fine if you don't do gaming.

GDDR is for graphics cards, not system memory, if building a new system today, it will most likely be DDR4 (they are NOT backwards or forwards compatible)

if you are looking for the best, then intel core i7 7700k is still the king for gaming, if you want a budget build, then get either  Pentium g4560 or 4600, or i3 7100 (i'd recommend the 4560) from intel, or from AMD a ryzen 3 1200

 

i3 works fine for a budget gaming build, however the Pentium series are a better bang for your buck here, but if you want to do 4K, then yes, go with the i7 7700k

if you are gaming, then yes a 1050(ti or regular) will do on a budget 1060 is a bit too high right now with mining bringing the prices up

 

if you do not plan on gaming, then no graphics card is needed (for intel based systems since the CPU has a basic built in graphics card)

if you buy anything intel without a 'k' at the end, then you already get a stock cooler, and it will probably work just fine for you. So for example i7 7700 comes with a cooler i7 7700k does not

most people are fine with 1080p displays, 4K is still expensive, and with very little content available in 4K its still a little overkill

modular is good for easier cable management, but definitely not required, and for a basic build with just a few drives and 1 graphics card, 450-550 watts is just a bit higher than required (under load only really need 250-350 unless you are using VEGA, plan on serious overclocking, or more than 1 graphics card)

 

 

if this seems hard to grasp, we can always help out, building your own PC is not always the best for everyone, and prebuilt PCs are a good alternative for those who don't want to spend time troubleshooting when things go wrong

Processor = Heart of the PC. If you're thinking of gaming only, go Intel (Intel Core i-Series). If content creation and gaming, go AMD (Ryzen Series).

 

RAM = Memory. Go DDR4, that's the latest. 8gb of DDR4 is enough. Or go 16gb for more leverage.

 

GPU or Video Card = This is the thing you almost always need to consider if gaming is your primary concern. This is the one tasked to give you all that glorious graphics.

 

Motherboard = This is where you put the 3 parts listed above. Intel has their own line of motherboards. The same goes with AMD. There are 2 types of chipsets. I'll use the current labeling for both brands. LGA = Intel and AM4 = AMD. Also, there are 3 types of motherboard sizes that you should be aware of. I'll list the 3 most used motherboard sizes :

 

ATX = Large Variant (I suggest for first time builders, use this)

 

mATX = Medium Variant (Can be used by first time builders too. But since it's your first time, I won't recommend it. You MIGHT break some pins if you are not familiar how to input parts yet specially on space limited boards.)

 

iTX = Small Variant (Build unless you are confident with your building skills)

 

Powersuppy = Soul of your computer. This thing is the one that is tasked to deliver power for your computer. Go for true-rated power-supplies (80+ Bronze, Gold or platinum). Your power-supply will be dependent on your parts above. Do not go over 1000w if your parts wont even go that high. Saves you some money. Notable brands of power-supplies are EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic, Superflower. 

 

Hard drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD) = Storage for your files. TIP : Go SSD for your Operating system and the applications you deem that you will use the most. For other files, save them all to you HDD. Meaning to say, have 1 HDD and 1 SSD. People in this forum will teach you how to install these parts and how to install operating systems.

 

Monitor = Think of it as your television. BUT this will dictate what type of GPU / Videocard you need to buy because of the resolution. 

 

Case = The one that houses all your parts above. This can be the least of your concerns. There are so many cheap cases out there that you wont even need to cram in selecting which case is for you. There is only one thing you need to be wary of the case, the sizes. Like with the motherboard, other cases will only fit some motherboards.

 

Full Size Tower = Can fit all size of motherboards

Mid Size Tower = Some can fit ATX , mATX and iTX motherboards

Mini Size Tower = Can fit iTX motherboards.

A site that helped me learn and compare hardware is www.userbenchmark.com . To me, it's very noob-friendly. I started off only knowing how to reinstall windows and months later was confident enough to put the hammer down, buy my parts, and build my rig.
