I'm having a problem with my USB drives not being recognised on Windows 7. I don't get any messages saying they aren't recognised, I just get the sound that plays when you plug in a device, but the explorer shows absolutely nothing, except a generic "Removable Disk" drive (as opposed to showing the actual name of the drive and the icon selected for it.), and clicking on that.

I've tried this with a few USB sticks I have and it does this with all of them.

I tried rebooting and going to the boot menu to see if the PC itself is recognising them, and it does, so it must be a problem with Windows 7.

What do I do?

Okay, I looked at device manager, and saw there was a USB port with a warning sign, suggesting that there's no driver installed, so I got the driver from the motherboard manufacturer's website, and installed it.

It worked at first, but then it just stopped working again.

It only seems to work whenever it feels like it, like some days it works perfectly without problems, but6 another day it won't work at all.

I'm totally at a loss now, does anyone have any ideas?

Are they USB 3.X? Windows 7 doesn't have native USB 3.0 support, and you'll need to install drivers for them to work.

You said you installed drivers, but that it's not working reliably. Which drivers did you install? Maybe another driver will work.

Some are 3.0, some 3.1, and some pre 3.0, and the drives don't work on either.

I looked up my motherboard online, and found the driver downloads at the manufacturer's website. They drivers didn't work, though.

Do other peripherals work on those ports?

Yeah, my Xbox One controller, my microphone, my drawing tablet and my external floppy drive all work just fine...
