Specs of my system:

- i7 5820k STOCK @ 3,4ghz, 1,017V

- GTX980 @ 125%Power, 1500Mhz, +87mV

- quad port gigabit card

- wlan ac card

- 16Gb DDR4 HyperX Fury

- EVGA G2 850W

 

To measure power I have a wall plug from Brennstuhl, which read 1070W with following programs running:

- prime 95 with blend test

- furmark

 

First of all, how can a 850W psu supply so much power more than it is actually specced to deliver and over more than five minutes without a problem (but it went to 50°C as far as I could measure from the outside)?

Secondly, how can a single gpu system pull so much power? It is also idling @ around 300-400W (when cpu is oc'd to 4,2Ghz and 1,32V it's around 500W)?!

To my luck temperature is not an issue as i have cpu and gpu watercooled with 7 120mm fans.

inefficiency 

 

furmark can kill gpus, prime95 isn't a real world load

Something is definitely wrong with your tests...

I've got two GTX 980Ti and a 5930K and under similar tests the system doesn't pull more than ~650 watts from the wall

If so I wouldn't know what sadly.

When I switch off the switch on the back of psu it correctly shows me 0W

When the pc is off but still connected to power it shows me ~13W

In the BIOS/UEFI it's 300W ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have tried disconnecting all USB devices and even the monitor cables --> slim to no difference

I also don't have anything else running on the powermeter socket, only the pc

wrong measuring results, these higher quality PSUs will throttle themselves if they exceed their power limit on any of the rails and simply cause your system to shutdown, inefficiency cant cause an increase of 25%, that would work only on a noname PSU

No way in hell is your PC using that much power. Disregard it. I doubt your system is drawing more than 350W.

Yes

 

Get a Kill-o-Watt and that will display power drawn from the wall which is a much closer estimate of how much power the system is actually drawing.

PSU's don't "throttle themselves".  They reach a threshold and just shut down.

 

To the OP:  Your power meter is shit.  It's wrong.  Throw it away.

Someone @ Hardwareluxx mentioned that there were some of the Brennstuhl devices that have a bug and show double the power consumption.

So your computer really needs around 537W - wich still is a lot...

 

To the OP:  Your power meter is shit.  It's wrong.  Throw it away.

Yes.  It is.

 

It suffers the same bug as the Kill-A-Watt... which is also shit.  You wouldn't do PSU reviews with one, would you?  I used a Kill-A-Watt when I first started and when I realize how screwed up the figures were in some of my earlier reviews, I turned beet red with embarrassment.

 

Let me clarify....  It's a good consumer level device in most cases, but those devices are easily fooled by switch mode products.

 

Of course, if we have someone assuming that their PSU is pulling 1070W from the wall because they believe their equipment is infallible, maybe the meter isn't as much to blame as the user.
