you're actually thinking of a powerline adaptor, not power over ethernet.

PoE allows you to power something like a camera, with just a network cable  (will not work with your computer)

Powerline adaptors allow you to basically plug you ethernet cable into a power outlet in your wall, and pick it up somewhere else.

you just need one of these

you plug one end into a wall near your router (and plug it into your router), and plug the other end into a wall near your computer(and plug it into your computer)

EDIT: this does not work in all homes, and it does not work very well with more than one device, and speeds will vary drastically depending on how power is run in your house.

with a powerline connector do I need a network switch of something of that sort? I'm thinking of using it to connect to Ethernet to use my full connection.

make sure to quote me so i get a notification :)

you wont need a switch.  you'll just need 2 ethernet cables and 2 powerline adaptors(the kit i linked comes with 2 so you will only need to buy the kit, and nothing else.)

Agreed.

Now if OP wants to supply multiple devices with ethernet on the other end of the powerline, a switch would be needed and it would go right into the powerline adapter on one end via ethernet cable and ethernet cables going to all the things :)
