I'm thinking about upgrading my GPU.  Here are my system specs:

CPU:  I5-6600K OC'ed to 4.5ghz
Mobo:  Asus Z-170A

GPU:  Gigabyte R9 380 4GB G1 Gaming OC'ed about 4.5%
Ram:  16GB of DDR4 - Corsair Dominatior

PSU:  650W 80+ Gold - ??? (Can't remember brand).

Monitor:  144hz, 1ms response time, freesync 24" AOC monitor.

I like the idea of picking up a Vega 56 next month I'm just not sure I want to wait that long.  Is it worth it to pick up a 1070 now?  Is a 1070 overkill for my set-up?  Any drawbacks to using an Nvidia GPU with a freesync monitor?

Thanks!

I know that Gsync and Freesync are two different things, but I'm not sure that you're right in saying an Nvidia card won't work with my monitor at all.  I think you mean that I just won't get the benefit of Freesync or Gsync because of the mismatch?

1070 and vega 56 are about equal in performance so I would go with vega

Yeah, I'm just not sure I want to wait for Vega 56 to come out.  I'll have a lot of free time between now and late September.  After that, not so much.  I kinda need something I can enjoy now, which is why a 1070 looks so attractive to me.

get vega 56 for your freesync monitor. kinda pointless to go nvidia if you dont have a g-sync monitor....

No. You buy a monitor like that for gaming. You buy a graphics card to go with it for gaming. Buying a gpu to use a feature that introduces input lag when your refresh rate eliminates most of the screen tearing by itself that freesync is designed around is a crappy idea.

Buy a good gpu, not necessarily one that allows you to use freesync. Make the decision based on performance, not freesync.

My point was that if I knew, I wouldn't be asking.  I wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers (though I was intending to be a bit cheeky).  I did not understand the meaning of your comment.  Thanks for explaining.
