need help trying to decide on a new work computer

Hey forum,

I have been having a delima... i am looking for a new work computer. I do architectural drawings using multiple different auto cad programs. On the side i also use photo and video editing software for 4k material (adobe PS and PP). I have a custom built PC right now, a decent computer/gaming rig (7700k, 16gb ram, 1080ti, ect) that does the job perfectly for me right now, but i had to take it from home and put it in my office but now i need to bring my pc home instead of lugging a 50+ pound computer back and forth so i need to replace it with something. I originally was thinking a laptop because i like being able to go to jobsites and draw a little more on the go. the biggest factor to my search is that i already have the large power house computer for what i need so i am looking for a thin laptop that is semi light and not one of the large ones that fit almost a full gpu in them. The options that i am between right now are the surface book with the i7 and 512gb hd and the macbook pro 2017 equivilent, and was temporarily thinking about the surface studio, but then i am not sure about that one just because of the more dated hardware that is in it (winning side to it is the drawing, and what looks like a semi easy to move form factor if i wanted to move the computer a little more often). I am just curios what other people would have to say, or if there are other computers that anyone can suggest that meets the better hardware in the small form factor.

  thanks - C

if you prefer a laptop i would choose the ASUS ROG Zephyrus its pretty strong with good hardware. Else you can create a itx build(i think linus made a video about small form factor pcs)

i typically dont suggest the the surface products because of them not being upgradable and impossible to fix likewise the mac doesnt come to far from that exact issue barring all dongle/third-party hardware and money struggles aside.

Since your using it for work with CAD software and some media creation/editing

-it is clear that you want to get something with a tapped processor running on all cylinders so newer i7s are a must especially with processor heavy tasks like editing and CAD

-next would be advised is to get something with a graphics chip to unload some of that work from the processors and pic up some extra grphics capabilities i.e. 3d physix for CAD.

-finally typically i never suggest starting out or limiting your search to what already has a ton of ram or included Solid state drives because you can upgrade those your self when ever needed.

(Ex. i7, gt1070,ssd and 16 gb ram = $1500 <<<<  hdd and 8 gb ram gt1070 i7 = $899)

 - closing thought for a work pc i would keep in mind the battery life because you dont wanna be stuck to a wire

If you're gonna do CAD work, photo and video editing, you're gonna want a color accurate screen. And since you go back and forth between home and office, you gonna need some big juice as well to not depend much on wall plug. If you're looking for something that somewhat has replaceable RAM and Storage, the Dell XPS 15 might fit your bill. I think it's a better option compared to Surface Books and MacBook Pros. Since it's got GTX 1050 and color-accurate screen. Although I admit, the Surface Books and MacBook Pros have great build quality. Especially Macs if you use their Final Cut Pro software for video editing, it's one of the fastest performing video editors. However, they are expensive for the specs given. Which is why I recommend you the Dell XPS 15.

Look at the lenovo yoga 720 15inches.

It's a two in one, supports digital pen, 7700hq, 16gb ddr4 ram, 1050 2gb vram, your choice of storage (256gb to 1tb), decent battery, 4k display (or 1080p).

Honestly if you have the money, I would recommend the highest end version since you get the 4k screen and 1tb m.2 nvme ssd
