i7 4790k Nvme?

Hi,

i have a i7 4790k and a Asus Maximus Vii Hero... my questioin is can i use this m.2 ssd on my system ? Because someone asked me if i have nvme and i am not quit sure about it. I couldn t finde anything.

Did a bit of looking, it appears you can't get NVMe speeds without an adapter on your current board.

ok... i can use the ssd but i dont get the full speed, only if i buy the adapter. Correct ?

Nope, you need a pci-e x4 M.2 slot, I think it's only z170 and later that may have those on board. I know my z97 board didn't for sure. It won;t work at all on your board, as it's not keyed correctly IIRC.

You can get a pci-e card which supports m.2 NVME drives.

My z97 sabertooth got nvme support in a bios update. Think you need to enable it in the bios. Don't think it runs more than 2x and pretty sure I can't use it asa boot device. Asus support should know...

I don't know any more than what the spec sheet shows, and from searches on forums as to whether it works fully at x4, slower at x2 or not at all. I personally would just get a pci-e adaptor card if you want one.

 

On another nore though, why do you want one? they aren't really any faster than SATA SSD in most situations. For them to function at faster speeds, they also have to have a device that is capable of those speeds too, to copy data to and from for example. The boot times are pretty much the same as a SATA SSD drive. The IOPS will be faster I think, but regular use of the PC you will not really notice any difference I think.

 

I would read up some on NVME drives before purchasing if I were you, you could be wasting your money geting an NVME drive instead of a cheaper SSD.

@paddy-stonewell i was going to get a SSD but the M.2 is at the moment cheaper... so i thougt why not go for the smaller and faster one

Well, if it's cheaper then it's not going to hurt anything if it operates at SATA speeds anyway. So go ahead and buy it if that's what you want. Worst casse scenario is that you have it operating at PCI-e x2 speed, or have to get a pci-e m.2 adaptor that's around $10-15 or something. Plus it'll come in useful if you upgrade your mobo in the future anyway.
