Hi there,

I currently have an ASUS GTX 980 Ti STRIX and an i5-4750 as my CPU with 16 GB of RAM built into my system.

I often wondered if my rather "old" CPU is holding my GPU back cause often I have the feeling if I'm lowering the settings the Framerate doesn't change at all or only a little bit.

So currently I am in the situation that I have to send back my 1.5-year-old GPU due to Coil whining (I'm very sensitive to high pitched sounds)

So now what do you recommend? Should I just buy a card in the same performance range (GTX 1070 maybe) or should I upgrade the rest of my System as well?

So would my i5-4750 bottleneck a GTX 1070 and if yes what CPU would you recommend (the overall budget would be ~900$)?

(I'm currently playing at 1440p with 144 Hrz. mostly Rainbow Six Siege, GTA, and other FPSs)

Thanks for your help!

Is there any way to find out if my CPU is holding my GPU? (My CPU is always at 100% when I play games)

Well if your gpu isn't also near 100% then that would indicate a bottleneck. The fact that your cpu is reaching 100% though is indicating that it is like going to bottleneck at least a small amount at times.

On average I would say the GPU is only at around 95%

So you mean upgrading to a 1070 should work fine?

Oh and what I forgot to mention I often experience micro lags, so if feels like the game has frozen for 1/100 of a second... could this be CPU related?

Yes, it would be a bottleneck. Upgrade your CPU to a 4790K and get a GTX 1080 ;)

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32

Mice: Logitech G Pro X Superlight (main), Logitech G Pro Wireless, Razer Viper Ultimate, Zowie S1 Divina Blue, Zowie FK1-B Divina Blue, Logitech G Pro (3366 sensor), Glorious Model O, Razer Viper Mini, Logitech G305, Logitech G502, Logitech G402

If it is running at 95% then that would indicate you are basically not bottlenecking. The micro stuttering is likely  due to the gpu being behind for a second and is pretty common  with i5s. I7s and other cups with more cores or threads tend to get better minimums which is what determines if you micro stutter and how bad the stuttering is. Upgrading your gpu might give you slightly smoother performance but likely won't increase average fps by a large amount.

Ok thank you!

But is it very smart to go with such an old CPU and wouldn't a 1080 be a little bit overkill for 1440 gaming?

Not at 144hz. 60hz it would be overkill but if you are shooting for 144fps you kinda want a 1080 of the game is demanding.
