I feel like I've made so many posts in the prep for this upgrade but they have been worth it. I'm a gamer and YouTuber but now, after what will be between 18 months and 2 years (parts bought at different times) since building my first gaming/editing rig, I'm ready for an upgrade. I'm running a cheap AMD Athlon X4 860K that's been on the market for 3 years now and it shows. I'm at the point that some games just barely hit 30 FPS on minimum settings and although useable, editing is not the best experience. Therefore I've decided to upgrade to Ryzen 5. I've picked the Ryzen 5 1600 since I have no problem overclocking and I figure the 6C/12T design will work great now and will still be okay for gaming several years down the line and if not, well the AM4 platform is going to support the next Zen generation so I can pick one of them up.

Below are the parts I've picked out so far. I know it's not a full PC but there are parts I'm moving over such as PSU, GPU, Storage etc. I'm pretty sold on the case since I still need an optical drive on a semi-regular basis and I know the 212 EVO is a solid choice for cooling. My main problem is RAM. I'm fairly certain I want 16GB but I'm not sure how fast to get. I know Ryzen can benefit from faster ram but I don't know where to draw the line.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/B8WpPs

My max budget is approx £500 and I refuse to put in anything that looks hideous. I'm up for black or white RAM but red accents wouldn't be objected to.

Thanks in advance

Edit: Not 100% sold on MOBO so feel free to recommend anything else. Needs to be B350 since I refuse to pay for X370. I won't be using SLI or CrossFire

Any reason why? I don't know what makes each Motherboard different and why is the Cryorig better than the 212 EVO?

Idk about the vrms on that Mobo but the ones on the asrock are good. And I've been getting consistent ram compatibility updates with mine, although honestly the Asus board is probably as good and probably has better customer service. Except the pro4 would match that case much better.

I've had an ASUS Motherboard for the last 2 years and never had an issue. I don't mind a bit of red in my PC. It is AMD after all and personally. I don't like the visuals on the Asrock.

It cools better, looks nicer and does so at 145mm vs 160mm?

Edit: someone else said mostly the same thing loool I have a H7 cooling an overclocked  6700k in a small itx build and it does so fine.

Thanks I guess but that was kind of a waste of time. If you'd read my post you'd see I'm using a lot of parts I already have. The 500 pound budget is for the upgrades alone. That's why I'm looking at the 1600 and didn't bother putting in the rest of the PC

My bad -

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor  ($197.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock - AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($74.49 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($131.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Phanteks - ECLIPSE P400S TEMPERED GLASS ATX Mid Tower Case  ($95.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $500.34

The ram is the best frequency, ASRock is the most reliable for RyZen and well for the case, it's all personal preference.

Thanks. I'm not a huge fan of the Motherboard but as you said personal preference. The case I had already discarded since there's no optical drive bays but thanks anyway. Why is 16GB 3200MHz the best?

Just remember that some boards might need a bios update for Ryzen 5. I have seen quite a few people on other forums having issues. The Asus Strix B350-F should work out of the box.

I don't have an issue with BIOS updates so will probably save there and put more cash into RAM. Any suggestions as to speed?

Are  you saying that you have an R7 with which you can do a BIOS update should it be necessary? (Asus motherboards with USB BIOS Flashback feature do not need a cpu.)

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Some boards will not work with a Ryzen R5 cpu out of the box. As mentioned by brob Asus have USB flashback on certain ones (Need to check particular board).

I have seen people buy the Gigabyte Gaming 3 for example and it had to be sent back to the retailer for a bios update before it would work.

Ah I didn't realise that could be a problem. Any BIOS updates I've done have been after I had a working CPU in it. I don't plan on upgrading till around Christmas so I will check those closer to the time.
