Does the BIOS allow FSB adjustments? If it does then get the Q6600 or Q6700, whichever's cheaper. Otherwise, get either the Q9550 or Q9650.

Google lga775 tape overclock. A piece of electrical tape over two contacts will get you a significant OC on a locked motherboard. With the OC, a Q6600 should do nicely.

That sounds almost as sketchy as painting thermal paste over the resistor on the back of a 1070 to make it a 1080. I'm not saying it won't work but I don't know if I would trust it

No, he is right there actually is a trick you can do to overclock these CPUs

 

It fully works, And a Q6600~Q6700 running at 3ish ghz is quite capable for such an old CPU.
