Say I find out a computer has been infected with malware, and I want to clean it as fast as possible without any information to be sent out over the internet. Most people just go ahead and run their antivirus in Windows, all while connected to the internet, which means while the scan is running anything could send out information. So is there a safer way of doing this?

I thought about kaspersky rescue disk, since in runs scans from linux, or is this only supposed to find malware that prevents startup?

Also thought of the idea to just disconnect from the internet while running a scan. While the scan run the same way as long as my definitions are up to date?

Thanks a ton for the help!

use a boot disk like MediCat or Hirens.

run all your scans from that instead

Hirens is great!

Make sure all you AV products are updated. Reboot in safemode w/o networking. Thats the easy way to stop it. Then just run your scans. If push comes to shove, just say fuck it and reformat and start over.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

personally i highly recommend NOT using hirens. its hasnt been updated in years and i dont trust it.

MediCat is much newer, stays up to date, and even has a live server 2012 environment (hirens is using winxp).

its basically the same thing, but better in every single way.

Back up your files onto a seperate drive and reload your OS. That is the only proven 100% successful method to completely wiping your pc clean. Doing all of the work and starting over is crap, but sometimes you just gotta suck it up and deal with it. -Repair Technician II
