Installing win10 from usb

Hi

 

yesterday my pc got ehm wierd. some how the boot file got corupted. So i started to trouble shoot it using a usb thumbdrive with windows install on it.

 

Problem is it is suuuuuper slow. like it takes 10 minutes to get to the screen where you select language, then its a second to the install or advanced option screen. when i then select either option it takes like 20 to 30 minutes to get to the next screen. Like now ive been waiting for more then 30 minutes to get the setup is starting text to apear. Its probably gonna take another 30 for the next screen to load. When first installing the os on thys system it dident take this long. 

 

fx8350

16gb ram ddr3

msi 970a

 

all at stock speeds. thumb drive is usb 2.0 and using usb 2.0 slot in the mobo

 

what am i missing here?

usually when recovery environment is super slow and chuggy, it's a dying drive, what is your boot drive ?

Dying drive or USB 2.0 but even at 2.0 still shouldn't take like 30 minutes.

 

Dying drive.

 

Replace ASAP, Install windows on new drive, leave old drive plugged in and see what data you can salvage from it

i have 2 x kingston ssd 250gb drives. both are +/- 1 year old

try another USB drive, 1 year old ssd shudnt be dying

@Insane Mana Junk, have you moved that USB drive as first boot option in the boot menu?.....this could be your issue, when you first did the install you had what i assumed is a clean empty disk this the boot order just blew right past it until it saw a bootable disk.

tried that, makes no difference.

 

Also tried another thumbdrive, same result slow af

 

Also tried selecting eufi or the normal one, same result.

 

update;

 

disconencted the c: drive, and tried again. now the menu's are running at normal speeds. But how can a drive that was perfectly fine die from 1 second to the other?

And how can it be that that drive was slowing down stuff? isnt a install menu stored in the ram?

It didn't die, that is the boot options in the BIOS you must save it for it to work. The UEFI/normal mode really activates when you are finished installing the OS, the UEFI version just has a few more control options and boots way faster then the normal boot type. 

 

What method did you format the USB?...was it NTFS or ExFat or Fat32?

ntfs im guessing. used that tool for creating a windows boot on usb.

you mean Rufus?.....that defaults to Fat32 i think.

idd, could be windows is installing now so i cant check. I will check the ssd health when i got every thing installed and working again.

 

To be sure i want to order a few ssd's , im not swimming in money, but recommendations would be appreciated

I only trust and use Samsung and Sandisk. Don't know what you want more than one ssd but the price of like 4TB HDDs are so good right now i only see the need for the boot disk being an SSD. I just installed some new Seagates 3TB and they get above 200mb/s from my SSD.
