Need more RAM! (AE build)

Okay, I have a pretty unique problem I am hoping you all can help with. 

 

TLDR; I need a lot (64gb) of ram and have to get a new motherboard, I don't want to break the bank, is there an easy option I am missing? (I am okay to spend a tad more to be future ready)

 

Things you should know.

I live and breath After Effects, I also do a good bit of gaming but it is not nearly as important as I make my living in AE not professional streaming.

My issue is I do not have enough ram as AE is a ram hog. It uses it for everything and I max mine out all the time, I would like 128 BG in the future but for now I can live with 64GB (even 32 would be better).  AE also uses a single threaded workflow so less cores at more power is best.

 

My current machine is older and has a i7-4470k, 16GB ram, gtx 970 and a lame asrock mini motherboard (my case is actually full size and the cpu is liquid cooled) I would just buy more ram but I can only have 8gb per slot right now and only have 2 slots. So no matter what I need a new mobo.  

What are my best options? 

I do not want to break the bank. So my first thought was to just buy a new mobo and add some ram. However then my max ram would only be 32gb and I am not sure it is worth buying an older mobo and older ram only to be in a slightly better place.

However I would also like thunderbolt support and the option to add more ram in the future, along with a second GPU as I do some 3D work that uses a GPU render so it can take all the vram I throw at it. Plus a second 970 wont be hard to come by.

But I am not sure... once I add the ram it will be close to $800.00. Do you think it is worth it? Also is there a better option I am missing? I saw that there are more reliable motherboards but the price-feature mix is hard to pass up. 

 

So yeah what do you all think I should do? Small step for man or overhaul, back up your opinion please and include recommended hardware. Also sorta open to getting a while new machine but holing off for now if you can point out one that is great but not crazy expensive I would consider it. 

 

(I would especially appreciate AE user's thoughts that have found a way to appease the beast.)

Fellow AE user here and I will say 64gbs is my bare minimum. People call me crazy but it's gone in a second. Secondly why the 7700K? Why not a 6+ core CPU?

Quick Edit: I suppose you'll be limited to 64GB, but it sounds like that's still a huge jump from your current setup.

Let me try to address everyone. 

First After Effects doesn't take advantage of multiple cores or threads well. So fewer more powerful cores are better:

Second, I must be confused with the motherboard as I originally thought it would work with this: i7-7740X but then saw it was a LGA 2011 and after reading almost everywhere that the 7740X was not worth buying over a 7700k... So if you have a paring that actually works and thoughts on the 7740X I am happy to hear them. 

 

All in all I am looking for the best solution to add a buttload of ram as affordably as possible. I have built 3 PCs now but have not kept up to date on what is best (hence my old build and miss matching parts). This is why I come calling to you the experts.

the 7740X isn't a LGA 2011 chip. It's a LGA 2066 chip.

The 7740X doesn't support quad channel memory. (One of the reasons people really didn't like the Xx299 launch)

A 5820K or 6800K and X99, 7800X and X299, or Ryzen 1900X and X399 might be your options. All of the CPUs and platforms support quad channel memory, and are fairly recent.

Threadripper 8 core? That would give you a decent amount of ram and cores for a more reasonable cost, and not be dead once intel releases coffee lake.

There's LGA 2011, LGA 2011-3, and LGA 2066 (Which are all different). The Intel Core i7-7740X is a LGA 2066. The ASRock motherboard you posted only supports LGA 2011-3.

The extreme edition i7s are on the 2011-3 socket but the mainstream ones are 1151 socket chips

Used X79 and 4820K is also an option. With all of these options, be sure to overclock, and get a decent cooler

 

Edit: X79 is DDR3, so it's not as viable when you eventually decide to upgrade

Some X99 boards have Thunderbolt 3, and many X299 boards have Thunderbolt 3. X399 does not have Thunderbolt. All platforms have boards that support M.2
