Asking for a friend

My friend and I like to play games together, but his pc is pretty limiting. Its an old prebuilt with an A8 3830. He sent me the attached picture and I noticed he has a pci slot in his MOBO, and I was wondering if there was a good, almost dirt cheap graphics card he could throw in. He doesn't have much knowledge when it comes to building PC but I could coach him how to throw in a card. I doubt his PC has any power connectors for it so would have to draw from the MOBO. Any help from anyone who knows more about this than me?

The GTX 1050 is a pretty good option for what your friend needs. Not sure if the A8-3830 could keep up with it though

Get an rx 560/gtx 1050, whatever is cheaper (or an old gpu with no power connection)

With one PCI 2.0 x16 slot, yes there is video cards that can be plugged in there but the super cheap ones wont make such a huge difference and there will most likely be a bottleneck somewhere else.

 

Do you have any information about the power supply? He might be limited there to. 

 

As stated above the 1050 is a good card but it use a PCI 3.0 slot so you wont get all of the power out of the card with that motherboard (and the power supply might not even support it).

 

An option would be to roam the used GPU market to find a decent used one with a little more power. (like an old GTX 750 or 650ti, you would need to check the specs)

No, you cant. PCI isnt compatible with PCIe graphics cards others recommended. There are PCI graphics cards, but are old, rare and bad.

It’s a PCIe slot. If you look closely at the pic, it’s the black slot just above the CPU.

For dirt cheap though, would a 750 Ti be an improvement over the iGPU?

i feel like a dirt cheap GTX 950 would be solid.

 

Though you probably are going to be bottlenecked by that CPU by the GTX 1050, it's not like it wouldn't be a massive improvement over the iGPU.
