So I have an RX480 Gaming X from MSI and so far it has been treating me well. After playing around with a few things in Afterburner, installing and uninstalling drivers I realized my fan speed was getting wy too high....up to 100%. However when that happened, my GPU was mostly at 60°C or even under that. Long story short, I did a fresh install on my PC. Completely whiped every SSD and HDD and reinstalled everything and it is happening again.

I am using the new AMD 17.7.2 driver, which is not a beta! So annoying.

Does anybody have any idea what is wrong here? I don't want to mess with anything in Afterburner or anything like that, because I had issues running afterburner in some games.

EDIT: I am talking about a gaming workload, not idle.

is the card at 60c when the fan is at 100%?

If so it means the card is obviously overheating.

Sorry what?

Set the fan speed to auto in Afterburner or manually set a fan speed curve

if the card has to run that fan at 100% speed just to keep it's temperature at 60c then something is very wrong with it's cooling system or the gpu is under load somewhere.

Overheating means the card runs too hot. 60 degrees celsius is not hot.

60℃ is not hot, as I previously mentioned the target temperature is 80℃.

Yeah it is , if the fan is at 100%.

The card should be at 30-40 when sitting on the desktop doing nothing , and only hit 60c + with maybe 40% fan usage during games.

The OP didn't mention if the card was idle or under load.

I didn't see him mention it was during games anywhere either.

Sorry guys! ;-)

I am talking about a gaming workload. The GPU turns off the fans when idle and GPU temps are in the 40s then, which is totally fine for passive operation.

You can set manual fan speed in MSI Afterburner or custom fan curve

Did you change the fan speed in afterburner??

Nope.

I have not tweaked anything. That's why I thought it should just run at default and F***ING quiet! ;-)

Anyways, thanks all for the lovely suggestions.....I reseated the cooler and put the graphics card back in PC and now it works......for whatever reason. I really don't get it. But it works now.
