AMD/Intel Exclusive RAM?

Go to solution Solved by asand1,

The cheap "AMD Only" RAM you see on ebay is a non ECC high density RAM. I did buy some and it will not work on Intel stuff. It will work on some AM2 CPUs and I was able to get an FX 4300 to run two out of 4 sticks. Stay away from it as it was meant for SOME AMD prebuilts, and works in less than 10% of AMD machines.

Hello, I'm not new to RAM specifications but I have a question about it. I'm thinking about purchasing some cheap DDR3 RAM as an upgrade to a pre-built. The seller says that the RAM is for AMD based motherboards only. Can that be true? I don't think RAM can be exclusive to a chipset but then again I learn something new about PC parts everyday. Any help would be much appreciated.

Does the description say it's ECC or Non-ECC? I ask because sometimes what buyers do is throw in unnecessary information, or things the buyers don't really need to know. As a general rule of thumb, if there are too many caveats, just don't buy it.

To answer your question though, I highly doubt in this day and age that there is ram designed for AMD motherboards only. With the new Ryzen chip, you do need a faster speed ram, but there is no one ram company that says their ram works best with AMD or Intel, they just sell the product.

Just now, Himommies said:

There are cases where the ram is slightly better on a platform like 2 percent but that's it

Understood, but that still shouldn't be a factor, or part of the information if the percentage is that low.

Not exclusive, but companies like Corsair have made memory targeted for Ryzen users due to its compatibility issues.

DDR3 is DDR3, it doesn't matter intel or AMD, the ONLY time RAM matters is if RAM is SPECIFICALLY listed as being validated for Ryzen, Ryzen does have some compatibility issues but they are less and less with every update, there is NO DDR3 that will ONLY work on AMD chips, what happened there is the seller sees a sticker that says "Optimized for AMD" or something along that line and since they know jack shit about how computers work they think that means it's ONLY for AMD and so thats how they advertise it..

If it's for an OEM pre-built, make sure the RAM you're buying is the same speed or on the QVL as some vendors lock their BIOS to only boot with approved sticks/timings.

RAM will work in any motherboard, but there are cases now with DDR4 with some RAM being Ryzen-tested.

I'll keep that in mind. I know RAM timings have to be the same. Thank you for your help.

Thank you so much for telling me. I was about to buy it too since everyone else said it would be fine. You're a real life saver man.
