I need some advice regarding reformating a drive. Restoring it to factory conditions dosen't remove all the junk that crate pop ups and problems. i'm searching for a drive nuker, but i dont know which ones are trustworthy. Also, do i need the windows key again to run windows after the drive has been "nuked"?. -asking for a friend, thanks for help.

reinstall it with a format through windows.

DBAN can nuke a drive, but that's more used for 'i have some sensitive files on my PC but i'm selling the HDD or returning the PC', aka it writes constant 0s to the drive

you dont need a key if you are logged into your microsoft account, automatically will validate itself through microsoft account

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I've used dban in the past, although it looks like the site has gone commercial dban is still there for free. Overwrite the disk surface once with anything and for any practical purpose the data is gone.

Windows depends on version. You will need the key again on Win7. Win10 may or may not, depending if it was attached to an online account or not.

You can format a drive through disk manager, removing literally everything. If you have only 1 drive on your pc, you could create a windows boot drive, delete all partitions and booting from there. If you are doing this on a laptop that came with windows 8, 8.1, or 10 you probably do not need the windows key but you should check with the manufacturer to be safe. If you are doing this on a Desktop then you will most likely need the windows key.
