1. Budget & Location

$1500 US dollars is the budget with some leeway for purely the machine and Windows 10 HOME. USA is the location.

2. Aim

Chrome (20+ tabs on average), CAD, coding, MATLAB and other math programs, gaming, future workloads that college and work will throw at me. Games I'm looking to play are Witcher 3, Battlefield 1, Overwatch, CIV, modded Skyrim, Dark Souls, DOOM, etc. My experience with games has always been very limited so I'm my initial interests are fairly limited as I have not had the chance to check out modern games very much.

3. Monitors

I'm planning to use one monitor at first and then expand to 2 monitors. I currently use a 1440x900 60Hz monitor that's fairly old that can act as a monitor until I get a new one and can act as my secondary monitor. I'm wanting to use a 1080p or 1440p monitor as my main monitor. Any recommendations that are under $250? I'm not including the cost of this into my budget.

4. Peripherals

I'm looking to buy a new mechanical keyboard with Brown keys and no number pad. Any recommendations? I'm not including the cost of this into my budget as I already have a usable keyboard, but I'd like to get a new one. I do not have a set budget for this.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My current computer is a pre-built HP desktop from Best Buy that was bought in 2012. It's old and struggles to play even older games and is having trouble with school related tasks. Gaming has been mostly limited to simple games like League, TF2, Killing Floor, Minecraft, and unmodded Skyrim in 3rd person.

For those that are curious, here are my current computer specs that I know of.

CPU: AMD FX-6120 (Zambezi 32nm Technology)
RAM: 10.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte 2AC8 (CPU 1)

Graphics: DELL 1909Wx (1440x900@60Hz) 1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7450 (MSI)

THE BUILD

  • Right now I'm leaning more towards Ryzen since it seems to have a better idea what it wants to be. Intel seems very messy right now and I don't have much confidence in investing parts for the future with Intel, but I'm more than willing to hear recommendations for them if you have any.
  • I'm not wanting to touch water cooling.
  • Overclocking is something I'm willing to do, but not until I find it necessary.
  • I'm wanting a simple case without a window (Blasphemy! I know, right?). Because of this, I'm not concerned about RGB or color coordination. The Fractal Design R5 was what caught my attention for this.
  • I'm wanting to go with a Gigabyte motherboard for their dual bios. It's a nice assurance in case I mess up as this is my first build.

Since your using Cad get as much ram as you can, 32kit vs 16. Also Ryzen performance is directly affected by Ram speed so get the fastest ram you can afford.

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

I honestly don't think you need the hyper 212 evo. The stock cooler is just fine imo

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Gigabyte's B350 boards have terrible VRMs. You are very unlikely to mess up your BIOS anyway, so just get a better board. You can easily get a cheaper 2TB HDD.

Dude stock wraith cooler will do for CPU xD

Haha okay. I didn't do much research into the stock cooler. I just assumed it was bad. Oversight on my part. I'll make some adjustments and put that money into RAM.

Okay here's my adjustment. I removed the cooler, added a different ram set that was recommended by Nath, and downgraded the storage. I have plenty of racks in the case I'm looking at if I need to expand storage down the line.

I like the keyboard. It has a nice size and keeps the number pad if I need it. Sadly, it's not available in MX brown right now. Drats! All they have is 1 of each of blue and red.
