If you can find a cheap motherboard for the i5, I would go for it, especially if you're going to overclock.

In terms of whether it will be a good CPU I used my 1700 LTT style, disable HT and went to 4 cores to test it out.  I'll probably be  posting results tomorrow but the preliminary testing is very strong for R3

BTW @A Unusual Bird my simulated R3 clocked at 4ghz beats my brothers i5 4790k, no mean feat in itself (sadly his CPU is at stock 3.5ghz, refuses to OC)

@Damascus.  Including only the cpu, MB, and ram "if I go for ddr4 cpu" I have a budget of around $180

Do you live anywhere near a microcenter?

Unfortunately I don't :(

Damn.  Go to ebay, type in 2600 and narrow down the search to CPUs, 1155.  Then pony up the extra 30 bucks for a working 2600 or a xeon @Droidbot knows the best one.  Don't invest in an i5 m8.

Besides, a basic 1155 mobo is rather cheap so no need to spend extra for dat OC

Finally, if you  can scrape together an extra $10 or get a few rebates/wait for the price to dip a little you can get onto AM4 with 4gb of RAM (btw if you have ddr3 already you can sell it for a good chunk of cash, maybe get enough for a b350 mobo (an extra 15 bucks)

If you can sell the ddr3 do it, get youself an  overclocking  motherboard if at all possible.  wait for 10 bucks off rebate, get it second hand - whatever it takes.  Ryzens strenths are OC and cores, try and make sure you get dat OC
