Wait a bit and try to get an RX 480/580 8gb or GTX 1060 6gb since they have similar performance to the GTX 970 but have more VRAM and are newer cards. Right now they are still a little high but within the next few weeks or so, you will probably be able to get one easily enough at MSRP or lower depending on if you buy new or want to gamble with a mining card.

Powercolor RX 480 8Gb Red Devil @1330Mhz

Bottom line:  Don't be a spaz or an 800lb gorilla when installing your expensive CPU, and you won't have any problems. --Phate.exe

What about a gtx 980. if it and the rx 480 8GB were at the same price which should I get?

If you can get an 8gb 980 at around $250 then obviously go for it because of the better performance without a boost or OC and support for Gameworks and some of the other Nvidia things that come with Geforce experience. If you can't get an 8gb for around that, then go for an 8gb RX 480/580. Boosted or OC will cut the performance gap of course and match it in some cases if the game uses DX12 or Vulkan. The AMD cards will have longer support because they are considerably newer than the 980 and you can also buy them new for a decent price whereas the 980 won't be new and won't have a warranty.

For some popular game performance results, have a look at this. Can't tell you how accurate it is but my experience for some of those games such as Witcher 3, Doom and GTA V have been pretty good. Witcher 3 has been mostly at 60fps with ultra settings and hairworks on with drops to around 50-55fps in Novigrad. I can change those settings a little and get rock steady 60fps too. Doom is obviously steady 60fps with Vsync but it goes much higher. GTA is good at high settings.

What about a gtx 1060 6Gb and rx 480 8gb at the same price. Should I still go for the rx 480?

That is completely up to you. Honestly a 580 is going to be easier to purchase new because it has replaced the 480 so is still being sent to retailers. The 480/580 trade blows with the 1060 in many games with similar performance in most. It really depends on the games and if you want the Nvidia Gameworks stuff and Geforce experience benefits or if you want 2gb more of Vram which you will never use before the card is obsolete. The 1060 may end up having a higher resale value later on down the road because of Nvidia being the go to graphics brand for many people even if the cards have similar performance. Right now I would hold off buying any cards unless you can get them at a good price new because of the mining going on. Sure you might be able to get one cheap when someone gets out of mining and it may not have been used more than a couple months but it was used hard during that time and it could have all kinds of tweaks to its BIOS and clocks/voltage. Most people dumping cards currently aren't experienced miners so they are more likely to have something running hotter or higher than need be due to lack of knowledge.

Is £150 - £170 a good deal for either of these cards?

Depends on if they are the 1060 3gb or 480/580 4gb and if they're new or not. Right now the 6 and 8gb cards are going for a lot while the 4gb are up in price but still cheaper than the higher VRAM versions. Just keep an eye on the market and if you can get a new one for MSRP then jump on it.

The 6Gb for the gtx 1060 and 8Gb for the rx 480.They are used but I can't spend more than £170 on it cause of my budget.

Those are some low prices, even used. Double check they actually work. Might want to ask what they were used for.

The descriptions say they've only been used for gaming and work. I'll check them straight away once I get them just to confirm.

Alright. Still suspicious to have them for that cheap unless its a store selling them. Even used they are easily double that.

Exactly my point. I wouldn't touch those, especially the 1060 because they could both be sold for double their current price without issue. No one in their right mind would try auctioning off the cards if they were 100% fully functional.

What other GPU would you recommend then for about £170 or under?

Nothing worth getting currently. Hold on to your money and let GPU prices come down. Now is a bad time to try to buy a GPU. You'll either spend money on something that isn't worth it right now and will regret it later or will have to spend much more than you should.
