So i have lots of episodes of Game of Thrones on my computer. Each episode is at an average of 1GB which is good but I've been trying to reduce it.

Every time I re-encode, I always seem to increase the file size, sometimes by double. I've tweaked the occasional setting here and there and it just isn't getting smaller. Anything settings I should change? I'll include screenshots of what settings I've been using.

Quick-fire way is to use HEVC.

Other than that, decrease the CRF or the bitrate, and increase the encoding time (Encoder Peset).

Re-encodes will never be as good as the original encode. Might be better to just download a smaller-quality encode.

Als Cyber says, reencodes will never go above the visual quality of the source material. Try changing the encoder preset to something slower. The encoder preset basically dictates if you want a rush job or a well-performed encode, at the cost of a lot of rendering time. Various tweaks to the encoder settings ( the amount of keyframes, B-frames etc) could also affect the file size a touch, but not too much. And ofcourse, drop bitrate if you really want to get smaller filesizes.

Some tips:

1) Don't reduce it. 1GB for an hour episode is already really low. It must already look terrible and transcoding it will reduce the quality even more.

2) Decrease the resolution. There is no point in keeping the resolution at 1920x1080 if you are going to decrease the bit rate that much. Bring it down to 720p or maybe even 480p. It will look better even though the resolution is lower.

3) Fast encoding Preset is terrible if you want high quality at a low file size. A slower preset will look better, but please bear in mind that the encoding time increases a lot when you select the slower presets.

Just make sure you disable the "Use Advanced Tab instead" because otherwise it will overwrite your settings.

4) Switch to H.265 (x265) for the video codec. It takes a lot longer to encode, and it is less compatible, but the file will be smaller for the same quality (assuming equal settings everywhere else).

5) If you care more about file size than quality, then it is easier to use the average bitrate option rather than RF value. Just make sure you got 2-pass encoding on.

6) Going down to mono audio would save you a bit of extra space, if you're OK with that.
